Clippers broadcasters suspended for comments about Haddadi

Quote:
The longtime announcer of the Los Angeles Clippers and his partner were suspended for a game following their comments about Grizzlies backup center Hamed Haddadi during Wednesday's telecast from Memphis.

Ralph Lawler, in his 31st season as the voice of the Clippers, and analyst Mike Smith were suspended by Fox Sports Prime Ticket for Friday's game against the Denver Nuggets at Staples Center.

Toward the end of the 106-91 loss to the Grizzlies, Haddadi entered the game. A 7-foot-2 center, Haddadi is the first Iranian to play in the NBA. When he entered, Smith began a 40-second exchange by saying, 'Look who's in?" Lawler then answered, "Hamed Haddadi. Where's he from?" The exchange continued as follows:

Smith: "He's the first Iranian to play in the NBA."

Lawler: "There aren't any Iranian players in the NBA."

Smith: "He's the only one."

Lawler: "He's from Iran?"

Smith: "I guess so."

Lawler: "That Iran?"

Smith: Yes.

Lawler: "The real Iran?"

Smith: "Yes."

Lawler: "Wow. Haddadi -- that's H-A-D-D-A-D-I."

Smith: "You're sure it's not Borat's older brother?"

Smith: "If they ever make a movie about Haddadi, I'm going to get Sacha Baron Cohen to play the part."

Lawler: "Here's Haddadi. Nice little back-door pass. I guess those Iranians can pass the ball."

Smith: "Especially the post players.

Lawler: "I don't know about their guards."

A viewer apparently complained about the exchange and later received an apology from Fox Sports.

Seems a little hyper-sensitive to me.

Over sensitive yes, but let's face it Americans in general can be very ignorant and really tend to speak without thinking. Just like when they come here and start talking about the weather and saying ehhhh alot and talking about the same stereotypes.

At the end of the day they shouldn't have went there, its a sensitive topic, there's a lot of tension involved with Iran and such an experienced broadcaster should have had the sense to just no go there. I agree with the suspension because its small and its serves a message that this sort of talk is not endorsed or condoned by the NBA.

If you took out the Iranian references and replaced them with African references this would be an atomic situation.

Overly sensitive..just an attempt by the 'mothership' to portray themselves as morally upstanding. All they achieve by doing this though, is exponentially spreading the borderline remarks which in turn, acheives nothing but more hatred.

He was trying to say that the Clippers announcers were very complimentary of the Raptors. Some of us were actually having a good chuckle about it last Friday during the victory over the Clips. Lawler and Smith made glowing comments about Jose, Bargs, and Bosh, even when the Raps started the game slow. They showed a lot of love.

I think the Haddid situation is being blown out of proportion. But I've listened to Lawler and Smith many times, so I give them the benefit of the doubt. When I lived in another city, I used to get KTLA (Warner bros. affiliate) and they called the games. From what I remember, they are decent guys.

Imagine if they were talking about Bargs and making jokes about Italians being able to hit the 3-ball. "Well, the Centers can, but I don't know about the guards." Would that statement have been such a big deal? They'd probably have to spell out his name, too, since it doesn't exactly role off everybody's tongue.

I mean, Haddid DOES look a bit like Sacha Baron Cohen from some angles. Kyle Korver gets compared to Ashton Kutcher all the time. The obvious Elephant in the room is the middle east card. People are very oversensitive about this stuff in today's climate.

It could have been far worse; they could have said "that Iranian sure nuked the clips defense with that missile like back door pass."

Ignorance is an extensive characteristic of our brand..It's not confined to specific land masses and borders IMO..

Wow, they suspend their announcers over stuff like that, but it is okay to make fun of our military personnel who are dying in Afghanistan because of a terrorist attack in the U.S.

If you can describe Americans in that way, then please don't tell me you about to exempt Canadians from that. One thing that I cannot stand is the Canadians who somehow believe that they are vastly different, superior undertones imbedded in an inferiority complex, than Americans. Americans and Canadians are closer than they are different. I understand the garrison mentality vs the concept of the frontier, but we're not all that different.

the problem for me is equating his game to his nationality and cultural origins, making assertions on that basis. it's this quiet shit that i find more offensive honestly because most people tend to want to smooth it over which is on par with their statements.
