Picking up Billups seems a bit weird. However, if it was a tactic to grease the wheels of this trade, it's not so bad. I'm totally speculating here but it's possible the Clipps simply picked up Billups to send a message to the league when the Hornets' negotiators were asking for Bledsoe AND Gordon, but the Clipps wanted to be able to keep one. The Clipps might have just beeen saying..."Look, we don't have to do this trade. We just improved our PG situation by picking up Billups" even though the Clipps still really wanted Paul. Billups only cost the Clipps $2 million. Whatever the motivation, it's not a big deal. Teams throw more cash than that into deal when making cash considerations.

Can Billups be waived a second time? haha I might need to look into that.

EDIT - I checked, and according to Wojo, Billups could be waived again (just not traded) but the Clippers have reportedly stated they do not plan to waive him.

Wait if the league owns the hornets does that mean mlse owns a small portion of them?

If so then this is a great deal considering Paul wanted to leave!

The Billups pickup still makes no sense to me unless he is cool with coming off of the bench playing 20-25 MPG.

Theres a few points to be made on this trade:

1. David Stern owned everyone. Even though he clearly crossed some lines in what he did, he did what was best for the NBA run Hornets, and got them a fantastic deal. It was 10000x better than the Lakers deal. Demps should be fired immediately. Stern needs to replace BC as our GM immediately.

2. Clippers need to sign Aaron Afflalo immediately. Theyll have a very solid defensive team if they can sign him or someone like him that can spread the floor and play D.

3. They then need to sign another G/F to backup the 2/3, and sign a Pryzbilla like C to backup Jordan.

The Clippers made a bold move, but it's hard to argue what could turn out to be one of the best duos ever. Just gotta surround them with the right talent now. The Clips are now my #1 cant miss team on LP. They willl be a title contender THIS YEAR if they can fill the holes mentioned above.

Clippers

Now I've seen alot of weird, logic-defying 'transactions' the last few years in the NBA, but this one is....very odd.

From the Hornet's fan POV, as sad as it is to see Chris Paul go (& David West, and Tyson Chandler before that...and Coach Byron Scott, you get the idea ), they're getting a much better package than whatever LAL was said to be 'offering.'

But upon getting Chauncey Billups earlier, who can't be 'traded' for 11-12 as the Clippers reportedly picked up his whole salary off waivers (there's a rule in the CBA that rules against it), getting Chris Paul is a redundant move. Yes Chris is an all-world point guard, but Chauncey's still a top-6 point guard in his own right. And Chauncey's game isn't the type to be effective at the SG spot beside CP3 either, especially not in comparison to what Eric Gordon could've done for them there. Chauncey's only gonna be a spot-up shooter beside CP3.

They coulda had Chauncey at PG with Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin, Caron Butler & Chris Kaman around him, for what could've possibly been the highest scoring team in the league. So while they've improved at PG with Chris Paul over Chauncey there, it remains to be seen if DeAndre will outright show he's worth what they're 'reportedly' gonna pay him, but have outright downgraded at SG, as Chauncey hasn't played there since he was a young player, which he's not anymore. Still an All-star caliber point guard, yes; still versatile enough to play SG at his height & build; unlikely to do so and still maintain all-star play. A Chauncey & Eric Gordon backcourt > a CP3 & Chauncey backcourt. And we can add CKaman > DJordan too. They got more star power, at the expense of less-renowned players who fit better.

But it's all a moot point b/c Coach Del Negro's an idiot who doesn't deserve ANY job in the NBA, juss like Coach Billiams in NOH. Have fun with another 1st Rd-and-out playoffs, CP3!

I went to both the Clippers and Hornets forums and what I found was jokes. Hornet fans are reallllllllly happy with this trade, like they won an nba championship or something lol. I wasn't expecting this, I expected some to be mad that Paul left even though everyone knew it was inevitable. Many were thanking David Stern like he was God.

Clipper fans on the other hand for the most part (and I say this because a fair amount thought otherwise as well) were disappointed with the trade. They thought they gave up too much for Paul, thinking he's injury prone and that Eric Gordon and there pick out him. Some were even like the clippers getting screwed again, like it was just a horrible thing, many on this side thought David Stern was the devil lol. Strangely enough I believed it would be the other way around and people would be jumping up and down about getting Paul.

Once Clipper fans see CP3 play with their frontcourt they'll have no complaints about the trade. Once the realization that they have a top 5 player in the NBA and a true game changer on their team, the negative vibes will quickly go away. Negative perception spreads like wildfire on messageboards. I wasnt a big fan of this for the Clips either but they were just going to be a middle of the pack team at best with the lineup before the trade, and Chauncey to leave right after this year is over, and then who knows what happens with the pick and the next offseason if anyone wants to go there. Now they have what's soon to be the most devastating pick and roll/offensive combo in the league, and their ability to build around the core will be much easier than before with this addition IMO

so they now have 4 PGs!? And to me it would seem none would be happy or suitable as the 3rd PG.

mo williams and/or bledsoe to be used to get in an SG? Afflalo (to improve the D,) or mayo (as a direct gordon replacement, not saying he's as good obv.)

if that trade happens the starting 5 looks very good! I think it's a good trade overall. Prob wouldn't have done it if i was clippers but it may end up benefitting both teams.

i think a cp3 and billups back court could work. offensively it may be more difficult but that team can already put up points. defensively, billups may actually be more suited to guard 2s. at this stage in his career it will be hard for him to stay in front of most starting PGs, especially in todays NBA where there are so many good PGs. he will have no problem guarding 2s tho in my opinion

Hornets will be alright:

Quote:
Carl Landry has accepted a contract offer to stay with the Hornets, according to sources.

Landry was acquired by the Hornets in exchange for Marcus Thornton near last season's trade deadline.

what stern has done is essentially helped the hornets skip their rebuilding process. they got to the playoffs last year. this year 8th seed is within reach, if not they'll still be competitive. next year they'll get 2 draft picks in the deepest class since '03. oh and they already have an established star in gordon.
gosh it sucks being a raptor fan....

i'm kinda glad the hornets are getting that much. But yeah, does bring our situation into sharp contrast doesn't it.

Not sure Eric Gordon is a star.... but the minny pick really helps that deal. Aminu is a questionable prospect.....

If only they could defend Kobe or Pau. Not even defend, just challenge a little... But Blake has an allergy to defense, and their wings are Mo Williams and a coming-off-injury Caron Butler.
Kobe and Gasol will go off for 40 each

Btw, Clippers now have 7 seconds-or-less dream team
