Cavs Cleveland Cavaliers to sign Anthony Parker

Like all teams with a legitimate belief that they can contender for an NBA champion, the Cleveland Cavaliers can use crafty, veteran bench help. And theyll be receiving a terrific backup shooting guard.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Brian Windhorst), the Cavs have come to an agreement with guard Anthony Parker will likely sign a contract in the coming days.

The 6-6, 215-pound free agent played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic years ago, then enjoyed a healthy career overseas before turning to the NBA and playing the last three seasons as a member of the Toronto Raptors.

Last season, Parker averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 33 minutes per game. Hes an excellent three-point shooter.

Cavs Parker to Cavs?

Quote:
Cleveland Cavaliers close to contract agreement with Toronto free-agent guard Anthony Parker
by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cavaliers are on the verge of making their first free agent signing of the summer.

According to a league source, the team has agreed to the structure of a contract with veteran guard Anthony Parker. The deal is not finalized, but is expected to be completed in the next several days.

Parker, 34, played for the Toronto Raptors for the last three seasons after starring in Europe. The 6-6 wing averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3-point range.

He fills a major need the Cavs have for a tall wing player and was one of the team's top off-season targets at the position. They have been in talks with him since the first day of free agency. They talked to the Raptors about a sign-and-trade, but when Toronto decided to sign Hedo Turkoglu the Cavs moved on to deal with Parker directly.

Parker is an athletic player who is effective at creating his own shot, which he did often in Europe when he became the Euroleague's Most Valuable Player, and as a spot-up shooter. He has also been an effective defensive player guarding tall wing players, which is what the Cavs most need.

Over the last three seasons he's started 226 of 235 games, but may come off the bench for the Cavs behind Delonte West.

If we lose Parker, I'll be a sad panda...

Worse shot, slightly better defence. Not much of an improvement.

But in terms of the raps... getting rid of this guy as a starter is going to be the biggest difference from last years team and this years team.

And that difference will make up about 15 more wins.

Wow. His presence WILL be missed in the locker room. Really a shame, I was hoping he'd stay around to help DeMar's development.

Honestly, we're gonna get burned by him next season, just like how we got burned by MoPete two seasons ago.

The only good thing I see out of this is, someone hardnosed and rugged could step up and consume that "Captain" role.

What prescence in the locker room? How will he help derozan?

He didn't help roko, or solomon, or moon, or graham, or kapono. Our wings were terrible last year... and this guy is part of that group.

Good riddance.

Roko is a PG, so is solomon. AP isnt a PG.

Moon & Kapono were already in their late 20s, its kind of hard for a player to change their style of game in their late 20s.

Derozan on the other hand is a rook, but i cant see AP doing much to help DD out.

Parker is a hell of player, very complete, he would be great of the bench.

He will be missed.

Parker was consistent and always played hard. I wish him well.

I think that he'll fit in well in his back-up SG position with Cleveland.

You know how ignorant you sound right now.

Many within the media and the coaching staff continuously praised Anthony Parker and his contributions to the team, it's basketball IQ, it's professionalism etc.

How do we know he didn't have an influence on Roko? Roko's only played what 82 games. Solomon was his own player and was trashed for a reason. Graham, Kapono and Moon, were again, all their own players. Not rookies that can be influenced by veterans to varying degrees.

What he did bring was stability. Look when he played PG for this team. His versatility paid off, his calmness on the court etc.

Had he been paired with a top tier 3, none of us would be complaining. But we asked him to do too much on this team. More than he was capable of doing.

So yeah, smart players, who play hard, who do what they're asked, I'll always take on my team and it seems championship teams do as well.

How so? Because the Yankees are the oldest team in baseball, and the Cavs just got older?
