Thumbs up Childress On Life In Greece

Quote:
In the N.B.A., your top guys like LeBron and Kobe average 40-plus minutes a game. Here, I might average 27. That's how he operates. The games here are 40 minutes. I think people get things a little skewed when they see the numbers and how guys are scoring.

It's tougher to score here. There's no defensive three seconds. They play zone. There's all kinds of ways that make it tougher to score; the game is a lot more physical. It's more of a team game. It's a little more evenly spread. Like you said, 15 points in 27 minutes is a good number.

But that's not important. The guys that score big numbers here are on bad teams. The M.V.P. of the Euroleague last year, Theodoros Papaloukas, he's on our team now. He may average 10 points and 5, 6, 7 assists. They really look at who changes the game, who is the most valuable for their team. Not just who puts up 30. So it's a different mind-set.

Last game against Tel Aviv, after the game I was a little down. I had some missed opportunities. We still won, but as a competitor I want to do my best. Papaloukas comes up to me and says: "Hey man, relax. You put your body in there and got a steal and we won the game." It's more of a thing where they appreciate the little things that you do to win games. If I had scored 30 and we lost, they probably would have been mad. I think I had 15 and I got a good steal, and it's like, "Good game."

Interesting insights. But that mind-set applies in the NBA too. Most of the media might make it seem that it's all about stats, but many fans, players, etc. appreciate a win more with decent(not overwhelming) contribution/stats from players.

And more physical... ummm, you sure Josh. LOL. Now that line is BS!

Yeah hes just trying to pump up his new territory. Once hes back in the league he'll probably say what a joke the league was. The tougher to score and the more physical part was the part that really made the bs meter go off. He seems like a humble guy with his head screwed on straight so its not surprising he said all the right things. Nice to see things are working out for him, but he's fos. Hope hes enjoying the few extra million and knowing hes playing against D quality players.

the fact that its tougher to score is actually true. Very few times you see a player go over 20 - 25 points. Thats what no defensive 3 seconds and constant zone defense does. And theres also more tactict. So yeah its true.
As for the more phisical part, well the NBA players are more physical, BUT the refereing is not, specially with stars like in the NBA.

You may "want" that to be true, but you know that the NBa is a stat-focussed league. you can see it very plainly. It's way more selfish than the European game.

Although players get a pat on the back for diving for loose balls and steals, it's the 25 point performances that everyone gets all hyped about. it's all about the stats.

All i can add, is that Childress' quotes remind me how much i loved Garbajosa.

I would agree it's tougher. Players get mugged over there and there's no call. In the NBA, especially with the superstars, if you even look at the wrong way the whistle blows.

The NBA has changed for the worse. Watch a game from the the 80's, early 90's and basically every possession would be stopped nowadays because of a foul call.

Hell, just ask Dwayne Wade about foul calls. And if the 80's Pistons teams played in this era, I think their entire team would end up fouling out.
