Charlotte, New Orleans, Memphis on list for contraction?

Quote:
NBA commissioner David Stern has mentioned contraction as a possibility as the league enters economic uncertainty.

Stern didn't single out any franchises, but a Celtics team source told the Boston Globe that small-market cities like Charlotte, Memphis and New Orleans may be in danger of losing their teams.

I would really like to see them leave Charlotte
they'd owe 100's of millions to the city and sponsors of the arena which is a tv company that has a new big contract
in the end, will they really save money?

Those all make sense. If I had to chose a fourth to "even" things up, I'd probably go with Indiana.

logistics and Indiana is a basketball state...they've just had a crap team for years now, much rather focus on the winning Colts
back in the Reggie days they had some of the best fans in the league

This is true, but I'm assuming Larry Legend stays at the helm and continues to assemble a team of white guys who were only serviceable in the college game. In this realm, they'll continue to draw sparse crowds.

ya but Vancouver has changed a ton, the city is practically transformed since then

all you have to do is go downtown, the city is growing at a incredible rate,

th dollar is up, there is roger sportsnet pacific which would have the t.v deal up, sports radio is has grown leaps and bounds,

the next time the nba comes to town it will be a huge success, it just has to be owned by the right people, the Canuck owners would be perfect,

add sacremento, indiana and soon to be cleveland to the list as soon as the losing seasons start to mount up again. With less and less viable markets the nba is probably gonig to make its way back to vancouver again, just watch. Vancouver will probably be a renter

No way. You'll see a team back in Seattle and in Vegas, St Louis before it ever goes back to Vancouver. Ain't gonna happen imo.

I mean what did they last 6yrs? Gotta be a record for a new franchise as far as futility?

if it doesn't happen it will be because the mlse and nba have some under the table deal where the raps are canada's team and get the full share of the market or the league goes to europe/overseas and moves an entire division's worth of teams there because scheduling is going to be completely fucked if just one team is in england or some shit.
The NBA is sooner or later going to have the face the fact that there are very limited viable markets for teams left in the US if owners want to be able to sell high priced tickets and the trend indicates viable markets to be getting even scarcer furher into the future.
Now you say seatle which i agree with though i would argue vancouver is a even bigger and richer similar market.Stlouis? maybe, i know nothing of the city's population or econnomic climate. Vegas? no chance. Economy has gone into the toilet, i can buy a decent sized house 50K, good luck selling out the arena with high priced tickets even with the tourism because people have about a 1000 entertainment options when they're on vacation in vegas and who wants to watch a basketball game when a high priced hooker is only a call away.

i'm gonig to say you named 2 viable replacement markets, probably need another 5-7 more the way things are heading. Unless the nba is moving teams out of NA i would suspect vancouver comes up some time this decade

St Louis is crap market, they would have the same issues that current teams have

hell they can barely handle the 3 they have

Vegas would be a disaster to go into, to much could go wrong,

Seattle is a legit market but they don't have a building that could support a team and make it profitable

Expansion teams are always a risk. It takes time and the right management to get started and become successful. Two things we didn't have much in the days of the Grizzlies. Then the lockout hit and messed it all up. Remind me again how easy everything has been for the Raptors since 1995? I'm guessing being the largest city in the country helped out a little bit.

sure, if the nba has plans to sell good tickets for 30 bucks a pop. The fact is Vancouver is bigger and wealtheir then most these cities you've named not to mention that some of these city's have more then one other winter sports team to complete with.
Pitts? give me a break man, they couldnt even support a hockey franchise until one of the faces of the league fell into their lap.
Vegas? already been through this, newly built condo's are 25k, one of the worst hit markets in the US and there are way to many attractions in vegas for the tourism market to support the team, not to mention a team in vegas would not look good for an organization with the mob ties
Tampa? like i said, owners better be ready for 30 dollar tickets

Garbage markets for high priced tickets, Vancouver is one of few major markets left where homes haven't plumeted leaving the general population broke as shit. Alot has changed in a decade. That being said, asside from the raps i kind of hate the NBA as a organization so seeing the league fail in more US markets might not be such a bad thing.

The only viable market I see here is San Diego. But then you have 5 teams in California. Move the Clipps back to San Diego, problem solved.

Stl and KC are markets where basketball takes a back seat to football and baseball. Florida in general is a terrible state for pro sports. Basketball is too beautiful for the people of Pittsburgh. Vegas, too many distractions, no consistant fan base. Maybe Cleveland can move to Cinci. A fourth team in Texas, don't see it happening.

I don't think Sacramento is in danger. They have an awesome fan base and continue to put an exciting product on the court, even if they aren't winning. Since you've already given away your left nut, I will say that, on behalf of raptor fans, I would offer my left nut to Stern in exchange for the Kings being brought to Canada. Evans, Cousins, Casspi, Thompson....it's a young team that offers the fan base a reason to be excited. I wish we had their team.
