Smile Changes made to summer league format

Quote:
The NBA announced the details of the 2013 Summer League on Wednesday. And for the first time, there will be a single-elimination tournament to make the games "mean" something.

When the participating teams take the court in Las Vegas this summer for the 2013 NBA Summer League, a championship will be on the line. For the first time since the league's inception in 2004, NBA Summer League will feature a format that includes preliminary games followed by a single-elimination tournament leading to an eventual champion.

The schedule tips off on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas on Friday, July 12, and will conclude with a championship game on Monday, July 22. All participating teams will play a minimum of five games. After the conclusion of games of July 16, all participating teams will be seeded for single-elimination tournament play that will result in a champion being crowned on July 22.

There are two ways to look at it. One, with the games "mattering" more, it allows for an opportunity to see how young players just drafted or under consideration by teams respond to pressure situations. It also means a more competitive environment to draw fans.

But there's also blowback from teams that just want to use the Summer League as an evaluation period, to get a feel for how a player performs in certain roles and don't want to waste resources trying to win. Hence, the required number of games. It'll be interesting to see what teams opt in, and out, of the Vegas version this summer instead of the Orlando showcase.

And, hey, more time in Vegas for players with newly minted contracts! A win for everyone!

Yeah. Ok. That's a bit sad. I mean I get it, but it's sad.

I think he's saying it's sad because generally the summer league is used as a tool for GMs and coaches to analyze players. Not for winning.

it's not like it changes much. no one is going to go mad about winning the summer league, just a little more drama where was non drama before. I'd hate to watch a meaningless game of 10 dion waiters selfishing 40 minutes

Yeah, and you just can't make it something memorable by attaching a trophy to it. Maybe it helps in coaching a ragtag team to play like a team instead of trying to impress by jacking up shots. But to need that in itself is sad.

I don't know what you guys are taking about, this only make it more competitive, which is better for assessing talent. How many times do we see guys hog, put up stats and then suck in the league. Winning matters more than anything, this'll show the winners.

Will it work in that sense though? Guys will still be desperate to stand out. And they shouldn't need a meaningless trophy to understand that they need to show they can help a team win. There's still going to be plenty of bad basketball. It will be a bit like putting a sash and a crown on the prettiest crack whore.

Think about it this way, the more you win the more you get to show your skills. I imagine it will work similarly to the NCAA tourny. Also scrub guys have more incentive to play hard and not worry about stats. When games mean nothing, stats hold more weight than if winning matters.

Blazers gonna win this thing. Lillard will be there, as unfair as it may sound.
