Changes made to Slam Dunk Contest

Quote:

This year’s event will feature the participants competing as a team – three players representing the Eastern Conference and three players representing the Western Conference – in an above-the-rim two-round format. In a significant first in the event’s history, the competition will tip off with a Freestyle Round where the dunkers for each conference will have 90 seconds to showcase as many dunks as they want.

At the conclusion of the Freestyle Round, the panel of judges will then choose a winner by voting “East” or “West.” The winning conference will earn the advantage of deciding whether its dunkers will dunk first or second in the head-to-head battles that take place in the Battle Round.

The Battle Round will feature head-to-head matchups pitting East dunkers vs. West dunkers, with the judges choosing a winner for each battle. Upon losing a head-to-head battle, that dunker is then eliminated from the competition.

The first team to win three battles will win the competition and be crowned 2014 Sprite Slam Dunk champions. The participants are Terrence Ross, Paul George, John Wall, Damian Lillard, Ben McLemore and Harrison Barnes.

wow, bs I wanted T Ross to win not the fucking eastern conference

Torontosaurus 02-06-2014 08:38 PM

Ya im not crazy bout this whole East coast vs West coast gimmick, but the East looks really strong in this scenario.

Sounds like a cool concept. I wouldn't have minded to see T-Ross just defend his crown on an individual dunk contest, but either way at least it's something fresh.

so ross the boss is the last dunking winner? lol. this is a better individual competition. the 3pt contest would be abetter team thing maybe

3pt shooting is straight up shooting.
Dunk contest is about creativity and gimmicks, and theres too little of former, too much of latter lately. Heading nowhere, needed a change.

Don't mind the concept but wish that there was an actual winner awarded in the end.

Apparently fans will still have the chance to vote for "Best Dunker" overall, so I guess that'll be equivalent to "winning"?

Havent the fans voted for the winner for the past few years? The format is still the same with the winner apparently, so people saying that only the conference wins and there's no definitive winner didn't read the article correctly.

I think changing the rest of the event is a good thing. Something needed to change. We hoped that would just be superstars participating again, but the second best thing would be this.

In terms of the 3 point contest, I dont think that needed fixing, but I think it's an interesting addition being able to pick a specific rack where all shots count as 2 as it adds a bit of strategy to the game and I think it'll also add suspense if a player is behind in his score he can get scorching from his preferred spot on the perimeter and come back. The downside is the history of the 3 point competition will be obsolete in comparing previous years to this one and upcoming years though because of the rule change, but who cares if it makes it funner to watch
