Default Center court jump ball

I have wondered this for a couple of years now,
Why hasn't the NBA incorporated a mechanical jump ball dropper that drops down from the centre court score board?

It would make the game so much more efficient especially in overtime games.

We have the technology...

College, high school, middle school, street ball, etc. It should be the same for everyone.

Too much momentum would build up for the ball. The scoreboard is pretty high up (for good reason) and I can see players opposing this idea. Probably would lead to more jammed fingers/thumbs too. Plus, I think players prefer the traditional method.

How would you get the ball into the contraption? Sounds like it would just waste unnecessary time to me.

Plus jump balls are meant to go up, not down.

Momentum Schmomentum, atleast it would be consistent, which is something you cannot say about the current process.

Instead of the ball dropping from the the scoreboard they should instead have a contraption that opens the center of the court from underneath and have the ball fly upwards from beneath the court. Then have the door quickly close on the floor.

I was thinking something similar, however you risk the floor door closing on a player's foot. It might be better to have a light-weight contraption roll onto the floor and propel the ball upwards and quickly roll off the floor afterwards.

No, they should have a laser beam from the scoreboard to gravitate the ball at a traditional speed, mimicking a throw from a referee but more stable & reliable.

For shits and giggles, get a couple of your buddies together and have one of them drop a basketball from the 3rd or 4th storey balcony of an apartment building. Then you and the other buddy "jump" for the falling ball. Rinse, dry, repeat a few dozen times. Let us know how it goes. We'd appreciate it if you film the results, as well. Thanks.

The problem with all these ideas is the cost. A good cheap idea is to simply place the ball at center court, and have the quickest player from each team line up on their own freethrow line. Ref lowers his hand and the players sprint towards the ball to get control. XFL style.

they should have a hydraulically opening manhole cover in the center of the court, from which a canon slowly come out and fires the basketball.

Or we could just can the jumpball altogether and have a coin toss to see who gets first possession, football style.

I could time that shit no problem, I would easily get the ball within the top 2inches of my 10inch vertical. Not nearly as difficult as you're making it out to be.

Somewhere a gym teacher who loves dodgeball is nodding his head in approval.

Or we could start the game in a rugby scrum! I love it!

haha

Yeah, me too. But I'm concerned about the dudes who jump 30+.

Most of the time it might go off without a hitch. But when you have two bodies competing for the ball and bumping into each other you have a chance of a fast ball coming down on someone's finger. And if the ball was going fast, it would be more than your average jam. It could really fuck up somone's finger.

If this contraption is lowered so that it gets within 15 or 20 feet of the court, it's less of a big deal since that would just be like a really high rebound. But if you're dropping it right out of the scoreboard...

how about just flippin a coin?
of course no one can play ridiculous jump-jump songs but it could be neutral and hard to screw-up (will also provide nice speculation topic for tv)

Yup. I think people are underestimating the damage that ball can cause with all that momentum. I have a sprained thumb right now with ligament damage because of basketball
