I think they should eliminate the first Q jump ball anyway, and just give the ball to the home team to start the Q. The first jump just decides who starts with the ball the 1st and 4th anyway, with the other team starting with the ball in the other two quarters. It means nothing.

Now, this conversation is more important for the in-game and OT jump balls. In which case I vote for keeping it the way it is. Too much trouble for practically no gain to change it.

The ball could come out of a big slinky, which would release the ball at a dead stop as it reaches it's full length, say 12 feet above the floor? Of course there would have to be 3 slinkys that can descend from 3 spots on the floor - not just below the scoreboard.

I would never spend about 10,000 building the contraption, that could probably feed a couple thousand people for a good 2-4 months

A giant claw drops down holding the ball and stops a couple feet above the players, drops the ball and quickly recoils back into the rafters

Random audience member gets to just biff the ball into the players, after that its fair game!
