Yahoo’s Woj says that the Celtics and Hawks held “exploratory” trade talks about a swap but there’s nothing doing. This comes after a New York Daily News report indicated the two had held trade talks centered around Josh Smith for some package of the Boston Big 3.

Woj says the Hawks don’t want to move Smith for an expiring and the Celtics would rather just let Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen‘s money slide off the books after this year if they’re not getting long-term younger players. The impression I’ve gotten is the Celtics do want to rebuild in a trade, but it’s hard to see Josh Smith being the centerpiece if they’re going to move the Big 3. They have to get more than that.

It’s an interesting idea, Smith and Rondo together as a new foundation, but the Hawks are also still a playoff team and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Even though we know they’re not going anywhere, that playoff revenue matters and moving Smith for Garnett and Allen would be part of a bigger rebuilding plan. You’d need new and better ownership for that to happen.

It does show you that the Hawks continue to be open to liquidating some of their assets for the right pieces, and that the Celtics continue to shop the Big 3 trying to put together a new core. Smith may be the model of the type of player they’re aiming for, even if he’s not the big target.

Also, try and imagine Al Horford and Zaza Pachulia on the same team as Garnett. That would be*hilarious.

Rebuilding seems smarter then trading the star pg in my opinion and going for one year run, but maybe I'm over rating Allen and Garnett, they can get much more then Smith... Can't they?

No they can't. More like the other way around....Atlanta can do better.

I'd trade our 1st round pick + Amir/Ed, Butler for Josh Smith in a heartbeat.

Agreed, Smith is all star worthy, while Garnett and Allen, at one point were, but not now.

^ Common man, he's a good player, but our first rounder has a good chance at bringing in
a star

Every time you guys talk about some trades you include our pick in the package.. We are tanking all this time just to give it up in the end? :dead:

LOL

Josh Smith is pretty damn good, Celtics don't think he would be a centerpiece? :confused2: If I were Boston I'd trade anyone on my roster other than Rondo and probably Pierce for him.

Here's the thing.....

Would you trade Bargnani + 1st for Smith? Especially if Batum or Chandler can be signed... Maybe we buy a mid-late first round pick?

Calderon?
Derozan
Batum
Smith
Valanciunas

No way, we are getting a pretty high pick and chances are he will be way better than smith.

Name me one pick in the top 10 that you think will be WAY BETTER than Josh Smith.

There's a good chance. Davis will likely be an all-star at some point. Smith might be as well, but he's having a career year and still fell short.

Josh is yet another player who has upped his value recently. But has he done enough to really be counted on going forward? Trading him for a couple good pieces, maybe a pick as one of those pieces, would be a very good move. But Atlanta has to get guys they know they want and need.

As far as trading Bargnani, it could be a similar situation. There's no way you include the pick though, and you have to get back a guy that you definitely want and need to make a definitive jump as a team. Smith could easily mean taking a step back. Too many questions, and no real fit at the moment.

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 03-04-2012 12:06 PM

Keeping the pick means the raps have to give up depth in some way or form to get him. LB,J.Johnson,DD,ED for Josh Smith+player to make salaries work. Then draft Beal/Lamb.Jose,Beal/Lamb,JSmoove,Bargs,JonasV. That frontcourt doesn't look bad. Obviously raps would have to be creative regarding the bench because the only guys on contract left are forbes, lkz, + amir. It would be great if JJ didn't have to be included in the deal.

jeffb 03-04-2012 12:25 PM

Derozan, Davis, Bargnani

For

Smith/Williams

Draft Lamb if possible.

Calderon/Bayless
Lamb/Barbosa
M. Williams/JJ/Kleiza
Smith/Amir/Kleiza
Valanciunas/FA/Gray

We'd still have capspace I believe to add depth..

LOG 03-04-2012 12:33 PM

Why trade Bargs? IMO he was playing great + he is the man for helping the tank :mischief:

Even if we somehow manage to get Josh Smith, he'll sign with another team the first chance he gets.

Hmmm, May be? Not that we're Davis anyway.
