The Cavs will send Andrew Bynum and a draft pick to the Bulls for Luol Deng.

Sacramento's 1st round pick to Cleveland protected for selections 1-12 in 2014, 1-10 in 2015, 1-10 in 2016 or 1-10 in 2017; if Sacramento has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Cleveland by 2017, then Sacramento will instead convey its 2017 2nd round pick to Cleveland protected for selections 56-60 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Sacramento's obligation to Cleveland will be extinguished) [Cleveland-Sacramento, 6/30/2011]

The Bulls get under tax this year by waiving Bynum, which was clearly a major factor for them in this deal.

Other than that... a mid-1st pick that will likely take a few years to be conveyed. Two late 2nd rounders. And a right to swap in 2015 with lottery protections, which might help the Bulls move up a few spots in the draft, or might give them nothing.
In other words, a distant mediocre 1st and some sweeteners.

I think they need further trades. Get into tank mode or create legit cap space to sign someone good this summer.
Otherwise this is mostly a cash saving move. A few handy assets but a major talent loss.

Is it safe to say the Bulls are looking towards Melo in the offseason?

If they managed to replace Deng and Boozer with Melo and Horford that'd be a hell of a team.

They have to (1) amnesty Boozer, (2) trade Gibson and Dunleavy for expirings, and (3) leave Mirotic in Europe for another year to even think about making an offer to Melo. Even that may not be enough cap space, depending on where they draft.
Not sure where Horford comes in.

Chicago made a smart move, Cavs gave up many picks.

Where will Bynum end up?

Cavs finally realized they needed a small forward. This is a good step in the right direction for them.

Chicago gets a heavily protected 1st round pick which they may never receive, and right to swap picks with CLE if they're out of the lotto, so essentially a mid round pick next year assuming CLE makes the playoffs, which is no guarantee. They also get under the cap to avoid the luxury tax, woop dee doo.

Cleveland gets an expiring Deng who may not even re-sign with them. If they revoke the rights to Varejao(10 mil) and Gee(3 mil), they'll be at 35 million in guaranteed contracts without Deng, with 9 players on the roster. Lets say they sign Deng for 12 million per year, that puts them at 47 million, and they'll need to sign a starting center, shooting guard(since Waiters and Irving cant play togetjer), and bench pieces. If Deng tells Cleveland to fuck off and leaves, they're stuck with cap room and a city no one wants to play in. I'm sure Cleveland fans are holding out hope of using that cap room for signing Lebron. Good luck.

they've had 3 consecutive years picking in the top 4.

2 of those years with the first pick in the draft.

it's not often a team gets that lucky in a rebuilding process.

and they still don't have a solid core.

laughable.

Wouldn't Mirotic be obligated to sign a rookie scale contract? And iirc he was taken pretty late so his contract wouldn't be that late. But yeah, in the other thread cbs sports reported they plan to amnesty Boozer. Poor Thibs.

Chicago getting 3 picks for sending a possible rental player to the Cavs in Deng is enough to prove they just robbed the Cavs badly. I'm hoping though that Deng resigns with Cleveland and helps them get back to the playoffs because I am sick and tired of seeing them getting a high pick in the draft every year for the last few years.

I wish upvoting pushed posts to the top of the page.

Woodchuck's post explains it well. These picks are likely crap. This deal is gross, even if Cleveland only rents Deng for a few months.

If this is all you can get for a two time all-star SF, then I wouldn't expect to get more for Lowry unless you catch one helluva desperate GM on his worst day.

A lot to give up for an expiring player coming off an injury
