Not only does Cleveland need a SF, they need a vocal veteran providing leadership on the court. If Deng takes a leadership role, they become a good team. If he takes a back seat to Irving/Waiters, then I think they only improve slightly.

Within days of the Chicago Bulls unloading Luol Deng for salary-cap relief and a first-round draft pick, the All-Star forward rejected a three-year, $30 million contact extension, a league source told Yahoo Sports.
i can't blame him. he is only 28 years old and is a great two-way player.

Wow - he's only 28? It feels like he's closer to 32. I wonder if the Bulls saw too much mileage on his body or are just frantically trying not to pay any tax.

I think he's worth more than $10mm/per. Alot of good franchises will be looking to pay him in the summer.

i definitely agree that it looks like they're positioning themselves to grab melo, especially now with the news that they will likely amnesty boozer.

So they get will almost assuredly get 3 2nd picks (which Cavs had an abundance of) and the rights to move up a few places in the non-lottery part of the draft, and cap relief. That's really not a lot for Luol Deng.

And Chicago has now entered the tank sweepstakes after stinking out the joint for 33 games.

laughable.
I hope all you pro tank lovers are taking note on examples of how top picks don't always net you championships... lucky for all of us already knows this

Bullseye.

PLUS, how having the right personalities and tactics, in other words, all-round chemistry, can trump out and out talent.

Woodchuck's post explains it well. These picks are likely crap. This deal is gross, even if Cleveland only rents Deng for a few months.

If this is all you can get for a two time all-star SF, then I wouldn't expect to get more for Lowry unless you catch one helluva desperate GM on his worst day.
Not sure I agree, imo that's a lot for a rental. And If we could get that much for Lowry it would be hard to say no. that Sac pick is most likely going to be a first rounder, looking at how hard they are trying to build a descent playoff team and talent that they have it seems unlikely that they are going to miss the playoffs 2014-2017

Right to swap protected picks is also pretty good because Cavs are looking like they are going to be competitive too. And it would be very good trade chip to throw in a trade with a good team (ex Indy, OKC, Miami)

Most important though is cap saving and than there's second rounders as a bonus

Agreed, just need him to be healthy. He's a guy who will easily buy into a system, has veteran leadership, plays great D, can make plays and be relied on a little bit on O, and is clutch. It's hard for me too to believe he's only 28, he looks like he's 32 lol

A huge fan of Deng. No superstar by any means but a winning piece.

No, he's now eligible for up to the max. If a player stays outside the NBA for 3 years after getting drafted, he's no longer bound by the rookie scale, the rookie scale becomes the minimum he can be offered.

And since he's arguably the best player in Euroleague right now, as a 22 years old, the Bulls will have to pay up.

Hopefully (for them) it's up to midlevel. Top players can make more than midlevel in Europe (once you account for taxes). But Mirotic is probably paid less since he's still under an old contract that he signed in 2011.

Then there's also a buyout, as he has 2 more years on his current contract. The buyout is a bit over 3 mil based on what I can find and the Bulls can only directly pay a small portion of it. The rest would have to be paid by Mirotic, so it has to be reflected in a signing bonus and Mirotic's Bulls contract.

Will the Bulls be good, though. That swap is valuable if the Cavs are a weak playoff team and the Bulls are much better.

I think it's more likely that the Bulls will hit some rough patches, with Rose coming back after basically two years, no Deng, multiple rookies. Maybe they are better than the Cavs by a few seeds and move up from lets say no. 18 pick to no.16 pick.

Or maybe not even that. It's not out of the question that the Bulls could be worse than the Cavs next year, or that one of them miss the playoffs, in which case that right to swap is simply gone.

Yes, but they can trade that swap, it could be really valuable option for teams who are contenders

Not every team had Gilbert as their GM, this upcoming draft is not weak like previous ones.

I feel bad for Cleveland they're going absolutely nowhere LOL
They shoulda waited until after this year.

They can't, that swap only applies to the Bulls pick.

Good move by the Cavs. They get rid of an overrated bum and acquire an expiring contract that could help them with their playoff push

Bulls must be tanking for the home town kid J. Parker
