Carl Landry Signs Offer Sheet with Bobcats

Houston can retain the restricted free-agent by matching the offer.

"It is a shot at improvement," Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins said. "The clock starts now to see if we, indeed, get the opportunity."

Landry, 25, was extended a qualifying offer by the Rockets, but he failed to finalize a deal.

Enter the Bobcats, who have been seeking a physical presence up front to complement the likes of Emeka Okafor, Nazr Mohammed and rookie Alexis Ajinca.

"We saw an opportunity to possibly get a guy that can play both big spots, probably more so the power forward," Higgins said. "He is versatile enough to play the centre position in a pinch."

Landry averaged 8.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 16.9 minutes in 42 appearances off the bench last season, his first in the NBA.

The Purdue product was drafted in the second round (31st overall) by the Seattle SuperSonics, who promptly traded his negotiating rights to the Rockets for a second-round pick and cash considerations.

The Rockets have to match this offer or else this might be a big blow for them

Rockets got off easy. 3 mil a year for a rookie PF who put up 7+6 in his first year and played well in the playoffs? If they dont match the deal their gm should be fired.

you should be fired. he'll be a third string pf and completely bounced out from playing sf. letting him walk and not taking a tax hit would be the smart thing to do. it's not like he's outstanding or can't miss. there's a league for of undersized pf in the d-league, he's expendable.

Third string pf? Behind who? Sean May? Chuck Hayes if you were refering to Houston? Bobcats promised him a starting position according to EZ too so they clearly think a lot higher of him than you do.

He played a significant role on a western playoff team in his rookie year and you think hes gonna suddenly turn into a 3rd stringer? Theres a reason why he played so much, and there isnt many 'undersized'(apparently he grew to 6'9 from last summer to the start of last yr) pfs that are as good as him. Ask the Jazz fans if Millsap is expendable.

behind scola and hayes

behind battier and artest (both will see time at pf as well)

why should the rockets gm be fired? because you're angry all the time or is it because you think you're steven a smith and speak the tuth!

also

is millsap 3rd stringer? or a redundant undersized power forward? ummmm nope.

If Landry bolted his way to become the backup pf/c at mid season last year infront of hayes what would lead you to believe he would lose his spot back?

The Rockets could go small with Battier/Artest at the 4, but when Yao comes out for a breather who do you think is going to be playing the 5? Itll be Scola or Landry like last year. He still has plenty of minutes available for him on the Rockets at the 4 or the 5.

My comment on Millsap was one that speaks to his value to the Jazz/comparing his role on the Jazz to Landrys on HOU. He is not easily replaceable, and neither is Landry IMO. There isnt an abundance of backup pf's who are smart, can finish in traffic, rebound, and defend and they arent that 'expendable'.

landry bolted his way up when t-mac and yao got injured. there's no denying that hayes is inept offensively, and that's exactly why he was pushed behind. to a healthy rockets team, hayes defense is more valuable then landry's offensive abilities. i'm not going to say that landry is some chump, but he's not as valuable as some (yourself) might believe. 3 million could be a steal for the bobcats, but not for the rockets.

Hmmm that was quick.

"We’re really excited to have him back," Morey says. "We wanted to sign him long-term out of the draft last year; because we didn’t have mid-level, we weren’t able to get that done. So now we’re excited to get that done, and we’re going to have a great set of players in for training camp."

"We had a lot of time obviously to think about what range of money we would match and this fell into that. Also, training camp coming Monday, we want to get him in here and get the physical finished and get him here starting Monday for camp. There was a chance that this could drag out and we didn’t want that to happen. We felt like we had to get Carl in at a number that didn’t hurt our ability to maneuver long-term and we feel like this does that, so we were willing to wait and I’m pleased. I’ve said all along that it’d be nice if someone would just sign him so we could match and get this over with."
