Struggling Hornets fire Scott; Bower to take over
By NBA.com
Posted Nov 12 2009 2:01PM

A league source tells TNT's David Aldridge that New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower will assume the team's head coaching duties after the Hornets fired coach Byron Scott early Thursday morning.

Scott was fired when the team arrived back in New Orleans at 5 a.m. Thursday local time from Phoenix, where the Hornets were beaten by the Suns to fall to 3-6 in what has been a disappointing start of the season. Bower informed the coaches and the team of his decision later Thursday afternoon.

Bower was on the Hornets' bench in recent years as an assistant to both Paul Silas and Tim Floyd, but has been the general manager of the team since 2005. He has been involved in the front office during most of his 14 years with the organization, as a scout and director of player personnel. Bower was an assistant coach at college at Penn State and Marist.

Scott had coached the Hornets for the last five years, including a two-year ordeal (2005-06 and 2006-07) when they split time between New Orleans and Oklahoma City in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Scott compiled a 203-216 record in his stint with the Hornets, who are 3-6 this season and coming off of a 124-104 pounding in Phoenix Wednesday night.

Scott, who had a 14-year career as a player in the NBA, came to the Hornets after three-and-a-half seasons in New Jersey, during which time he compiled a 149-139 (.517) record and took the Nets from the bottom of the Eastern Conference (only three teams were worse the season before he arrived) to one of the NBA's elite teams. They made back-to-back NBA Finals appearances during his tenure.

its funny, i was watching last nights suns game, and they showed scott, and he looked really depressed... and i just thought to myself how this guy is in trouble.
too bad he's the scape goat... not his fault that he has one superstar and 11 scrubs.

btw, when is peja's contract up? that guy is horrendous... they are paying him heaps of money, and the one thing he was paid for - his shooting touch - is all but gone. he's such a liability out there.

I've never been a fan of his coaching, so I'm shocked it really took this long to do.

Maybe now they'll actually try to have some semblance of an offense and not simply say to Paul, ok, you score us points.

Dude i was thinking the exact same thing on all your points. The hornets organization is just being run terribly at this point. and the hornets are locked up in some terrible contracts (Peja, Posey and Peterson). I'm sure CP3 will ask to be moved sooner rather than later if he hasn't already. He is the best PG in the league and has said that he wants nothing more than to win and be on a contender.

NO. I don't know what could conceivably work but no way CB4 is in the mix. I'd be willing to give up just about everyone else on the team to land CP3 including Jose and Bargs.

Paul is definately worth Bosh, 100 times over.

Pair CP3 with Bargs, Demar and Hedo and it would be pretty sick offensively.

Then the team would have absolutely no post presence and no one getting to the free throw line on a consistent basis. As much as I'd hate to do it I'd rather give up Bargs or Turk.

wouldnt matter about getting to the line.

And once Bargs is at PF, he will do just fine at that. And still be a bigger post presence that Bosh is.

Okafor is the down low guy that would compliment Bargs.

Beside no way NO would take anything less than someone like Bosh.

How do you know Paul is not pleased with the firing? I like Scott, and I feel he's the scape goat. I also feel that this happned way to early on in the season. It reminds me of what happened of Sam Mitchell last season only Scott is a better coach.

I'm sure the the Hornets aren't willing to move the most skilled player in the league for star that would simply walk on them at year end.

Maybe Bargnani, Turkoglu and Calderon for Paul? Mkaes more sense for the Hornets. They get two young core guys who are reasonably priced for their skill set and a strong vet. All guys signed to long term deals as well.

its not Scott's fault and I thought they wanted to shed salary, they're going to have to pay the remainder of his contract

No, they changed course this off-season and moved to win now at all cost. That's why they took on Okafor instead of shedding Chandler's deal in a cap cut move.

again another NO.

Hell no i would not want paul if it means trading bosh, I personally believe Bosh is currently better than paul at the moment. But heres what i am willing to do bargnani, jack, banks for paul or bargnani, banks, rasho, bellineli thats about it...

think about the starting line up then

CP3
DD
Hedo
CB4
Amir

second unit

Jose
Bellineli
wright
Evans
Rasho

now there is no deffence problem or offence problem, or atheliticism problem, or toughness, i would love to c brian colangelo pull this off and i gurentee his team makes to conference semi finals
