Bulls Plan to Trade Deng, Amnesty Boozer

Quote:

The Bulls' game-plan for the immediate future is coming into focus. League sources with knowledge of Chicago's plans say that they'll definitely be looking to deal Luol Deng before the Feb. 20 trading deadline. Deng is a free agent this summer and the Bulls don't want to pay him anything close to top dollar. The second part of their house-cleaning: They intend on using their amnesty move this coming summer to part ways with Carlos Boozer. Boozer is scheduled to make $16.8 million next season. As we reported earlier, Derrick Rose has caught wind of the plans and is none too thrilled about being part of a rebuilding project. Tom Thibodeau won't be very happy with it, either

:tank:

Kirby and Koolaid should become Bulls fans! They're likely to have a high pick!

Whichever team gets Wiggins will be my side piece, fyi.

Can they get bad enough to legitimately tank just by trading Deng? Noah, Gibson, Butler, Boozer, several decent bench guys, great coaching. Some of those players aren't playing well, but still, they'd probably end up with 10th pick.

see they know when they're going nowhere...

They've had the same core for 4-5yrs and haven't come close to a championship. They tried to win it all but this group as currently constructed has run it's course. Can't compare that to us....

I think they would be pretty close to a championship with a healthy Rose. They can no doubt beat anybody and have proven that. They have a great defensive system that could've taken them far.

Either way I wonder if Rose will ask to get moved since he's not happy about starting over. He's a hometown kid so it'll be interesting.

No way are they a championship caliber team even with Rose imo

I said they would be close to a championship, for what it's worth. They have an MVP player(before the injury) with a great coach and an awesome defence.

still wont be bad enough to drop down to the bottom 6...

I believe they were a contending team for sure with Rose.

Like they know it's not happening this year and that the reward this year is too great to pass up... Rose and Thibs don't like it but it's the best for Chicago.

The reward this year? huh?

It's more so team/cap management 101.

Boozer has an albatross of a contract and has slowed down significantly. Deng would be another crippling contract in a position where you need to get elite scoring or elite defence and he gives neither and gets broken down.

If they get a mid-tier pick (giving them a much needed 6th man) PLUS make a splash in free agency and filling in the gaps and with a healthy Rose they're potentially right back in the mix.

Really, they're just cutting dead weight.

I agree.. last years team was good with Nate Robinson and Marco Belineli.. they really lack shooters, their team is washed up now... even with a healthy Rose

The Diamond Scorpion 01-06-2014 11:06 PM

I can understand Chicago wanting to get rid of both. With Boozer you have a player whose game is starting to sink, as he never played in Chicago the way he played in Utah. Plus, his contract is extremely bad. With Deng you have to get something for him because he could easily walk at season's end. Chicago simply shouldn't resign him because not only is his injury prone, but by getting rid of Boozer they are getting out of a bad contract. Resigning Deng would only mean another bad contract on their books. I'm a huge Deng fan, but it's time to move on.

The problem is that they aren't likely to have enough cap space to make this splash in free agency, even if they get nothing but expirings + long term picks for Deng.

Assuming the cap goes up to 62 mil, they'd have some 14 mil not counting Mirotic / 2014 picks. Add two picks (their own + Charlotte), add Mirotic (who's probably going to cost them midlevel). That leaves.. 4-5 mil in cap space?
Lets say they don't get Charlotte pick and Mirotic signs for less, still it won't be a lot.

There are free agents that make sense for them. If they could sign lets say Lance Stephenson, great. But that's probably out of their price range.

So then, what's the plan? Make more moves to clear cap space? Sign cheap mid level caliber role players? Replacing an all star with mid level talent doesn't seem like a great strategy for a contender.

If they move Deng, I think they have to get a very good long term piece / starter out of it. If that's not available, I think they are better off keeping Deng and trying to re-sign him.

Bulls most expensive tank in NBA history.

I would say the Nets and Lakers are too, but at least they are still trying to win games.

th3answ3r 01-07-2014 10:30 PM

watch bulls get their hometown hero

The Diamond Scorpion 01-07-2014 10:39 PM

It's going to be real interesting to see if Chicago makes any more moves before the deadline as it's pretty obvious that they are going to be tanking hard. One the other hand though with Thibs as the coach I can see him becoming an issue in preventing their tank from rolling.
