Breaking news: Kobe staying a Laker for a while. Signs to Contract Extension with LA.

NBA.com

Quote:
EL SEGUNDO The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Kobe Bryant to a three-year contract extension, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

"We are extremely pleased that we were able to reach an agreement and come to terms on the extension at this time," said Kupchak. "Kobe has been a cornerstone of the Lakers for well over a decade, helping to lead us to four NBA Championships and in the process developing into one of the greatest players in basketball history."

"Two of our main goals heading into this season were to sign Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol to contract extensions," continued Kupchak. "With the signing of Pau earlier this season and the signing of Kobe today, we were able to accomplish those goals, helping to keep the core of this team intact for the foreseeable future and in turn help to ensure the franchise's continued success over the years to come."

Bryant, a four-time NBA Champion, has earned numerous accolades over the span of his 13-year career most recently being named the 2009 NBA Finals MVP. In 2008, the 12-time NBA All-Star earned the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. In that same year Bryant helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bryant has earned All-NBA honors in each of the last 11 seasons and has been named to the NBA's All-Defensive Team nine times.

In Bryant's 13 seasons with the Lakers they have appeared in postseason play in all but one season (2004-05), and have reached the NBA Finals six times, winning championships in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2009. The 6'6" guard scored a career-high 81 points (55 in the 2nd half) on January 22, 2006, the second highest game and half totals in NBA history.

Originally acquired by the Lakers from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Vlade Divac on July 11, 1996 after being selected by the Hornets with the 13th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, Bryant is the youngest player in NBA history to score 25,000 points. Earlier this season Bryant moved past Jerry West to become the Lakers all-time leading scorer and currently ranks 12th on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

In 70 games this season, Bryant is averaging 27.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 38.8 minutes.

33.1mil a year in 1997 to be correct. Ewing was the second highest at the time with 20.5mil lol. That is the highest paid player in team sports history at that time. I'm not sure if the record still stands though. A-Rod may have broken it.

This is a HORRIBLE signing by LA in my opinion.

This season in particular I feel like Kobe has really become a chucker. He always chucked up a lot of shots, but this year he just isn't hitting them.

The problem is he is NOT a team player so if he isn't scoring he is making the team worse.

30 M, my god. He is going to be a huge huge disapointment in seasons 2 and 3, I'll tell you that.

Hahaha, seriously man, you dont even know what your talking about. I followed kobe all year on the fantasy team and by no means does he ever make the team worse. If he isent hitting shots scoring big the guy is grabbing rebounds or more importanly dishing out assists. He is also big at stealing the ball.

When he's off, he's really off - - but if you compare him to Anthony, statistically, they are pretty much identical, Kobe gets a couple extra assist, Anthony gets a couple more rebounds. KB's shooting above 45%, 0.8 above his career avg, and assist are higher than his career avg, too. So there's no statistical evidence to say he's on the decline or that he's less than an excellent player. I'd rank Kobe and Anthony around the same level, I don't find one to be much better than the other, both fantastic players.

I do think Wade is a bit better than both of them.

Then it's Durant.

And then the King is Lebron, who doesn't look pretty when he plays, but gets the job done like no other.

As for 30mil a year issue, I don't know enough to say what the downside of that is to the Lakers as a team. I do know that Kobe's been in the league for a long time, worked hard, and payed his dues, stuck with the same team, won championships, and so I guess maybe in some sense he deserves it. I say "in some sense" because fuck, nobody deserves to be a millionaire for playing basketball, but relative to the salary of NBA players in general, sure, pay the man for being an extremely robust 25+ 5 and 5 per game player.

I watch TONS of LA games (well I watch tons of games generally) and Kobe has awful shot selection! AWFUL!

He takes shots he really shouldn't and he misses them most of the time. He is often mislabled a "clutch" player, which statistics don't back up.

The Lakers without Kobe are still a top team in the NBA. You put him in another situation, he will be the guy you scream at on the TV because he is constantly trying (and failing) to shoot over double-teams.

I said it would look bad in years 2 and 3 and I stand by that.

Looks like I was too generous in my prediction it's already started!

Mr. Overrated, Mr. Chucker, Kobe Bryant.

Guy is shooting 26-76 this playoffs!

Ya he was awful yesterday, if he took better shots in the 1st half of the 4th Q they might have won.

I dont want to give him excuses, but the man is playing with so many injuries it ridic. He's not trying to drive cause he has no lift, explosiveness and his finger is mangled so the jumpshot aint dropping.
