Smile Bonner to play for Canadian national team

San Antonio's Matt Bonner, who spent the first two years of his career with the Raptors, is in the process of becoming a Canadian citizen and hopes to play for Canada's national team. Born in New Hampshire, Bonner has a grandfather from Newfoundland and his wife is from Toronto. "I feel very strongly about representing Canada," Bonner said. "I feel like I'm part Canadian. It just feels right."

Of course he has no chance of making the American team this way he can go to the Olympics. Don't get me wrong I like the guy, but let's get real as to why he is going for Canadian citizenship.

does it rly matter if he isnt canadian? just look other top sport nations - everybody takes what they can get. If u only look at French WC1998 championship team u ll see that most players arent french... Is not like he is doing it so he can sell him self for better money like in other sports, guy prolly wants to feal big championship which is understandable and if he can help u in the process then even better.

Hey I am not saying it matters. All I am saying is that I don't buy the "I feel very strongly about representing Canada" line.

Really? Why not? In all honesty how would you actually know? He has a lot of ties to Canada and loved playing here.

he just knows he has no shot for Team USA so he is pulling a Brett Hull (Altho Brett was in time proven more then good enough for Team Canada). I dont really care and i dont have some love affair with Bonner like most seem to do.

I don't think he's pulling a "Brett Hull" at all. Brett Hull got invited to the camps, but never made it. His mom is American, so he took advantage of the fact he could play for the US. Why not? It happens all the time. Chris Kaman plays for Germany. JR Holden plays for Russia (so does Becky Hammond). Hell, Even Peter Nedved played for Canada at the 94 Olympics (even though he's Czech) and Hakeem Olajuwon played for the States at the Olympics even though he's Nigerian.

If he wants to play for this nation, good on him. An NBA player on our roster can't hurt.

It won't make Canada winners (and by winners, I'm sure you mean medalists), but he will make the team better.

Why are you making a big deal out of it? If he has ties to Canada, why shouldn't he play for Canada if he wants to? I don't have any qualms about it. Some of our higher profile national players weren't born here - Nash, Fox, Dalembert...but if they have ties to this country and want to play for Canada, I have no problem with it.

like i said, he would jump in a heartbeat to team usa if he got an invite. He isnt really Canadian or did he move here from oppression or immigrate here, he played for the Raptors and married a canuck. If i married a german i wouldnt suddenly play for Germany if i couldnt make team Canada.

I cant think of any really good hockey player from Canada that did this besides Hull. That's just disrespecting your real country imo, if you arent good enough but believe you are, proove it here, bonner just knows he will never be good enough for team usa.

Again, im just discussing them, i really dont care at the end of the day, but i dont feel any pride in having rejects from other countries play for us. I rather give a true Canadian the spot. BAM
