Bobcats Sign Cavs Holdout Varejao To Offer Sheet

WOW ... what a great frontcourt for the future for Charlotte. Okafor and Varejao.

Financial figures were not available. Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, could not immediately be reached.

The 6-foot-10 Varejao has been in a prolonged contract dispute with the Cavaliers, which has kept him sidelined this season. He said last week that he would prefer to be traded.

I heard he signed for the MLE. If that's the case and the Cavs don't match, it's a great deal for the Cats. It definitely strengthens their front court.

Acie 12-04-2007 02:12 PM

Go Bobcats!

Now they have two offensively challenged, rebounder/shot blockers in the front court.

MangoKidHoops 12-04-2007 02:15 PM

I guess they figure they can get thie scoring from Felton, Wallace and J-Rich. For the MLE though, this is a good signing.

Acie 12-04-2007 02:18 PM

If it is for the MLE how does Cleveland not match it? They get him for 2 or 3 million less than he was trying to get them to pony up and even though he says he'd like to go to another team, to go from first to worst and for less dough IMO would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Ball Don't Lie 12-04-2007 02:19 PM

I was just about to post this, pretty unexpected. I'd say it'd solidify their frontcourt, but I'd be lying because their frontcourt, although very good, is always hurt with May, Okafor and Wallace. The Bobcats are a mess, but this is a good signing nonetheless. Hopefully CLE doesnt match so we wont have to witness even more flops in the playoffs from the flop leader.

ESPN says it's 3 years, 17.4 million with an opt out after year 2.

I think they're (the Varejao camp) urging the Cavs not to match - citing that he's extremely unhappy in Cleveland. However, we all know how well that tactic worked for Mo WIlliams and Charlie Bell.

Krazy Ivan 12-04-2007 02:36 PM

Varejao is dumb... he refused over 6 million a year deal from Cavaliers only to sign for less... I like his hustle and all but Man he is just dumb, dumb, dumb...

Claudius 12-04-2007 02:55 PM

Agreed Krazy, he is dumb, but this is an odd signing. I guess they don't expect Sean May back well ever so this is their back up plan.

i'd actually take sean may 10 times outta 10 over varajao..
the guy is a no talent hack who can only grab rebs.
IMO, he's overatted at rebounding anyways.
20+ something minutes a game last year and he only grabed about 6...
whoop dee doo.
his other asset is that he can flop.
hoooray!
he's shit!

I'm not a fan of May. The guy's been habitually out of shape, he's undersized and he's injury prone. Everyone keeps looking at his (Varejao) rebounding totals, but it's not just that. He brings toughness, he brings gritiness to the table. How many times did you watch Cavs games last year and you just wanted someone from the Raps to pop the guy in the noggen? Not only that, he brings an energy to the court that is infectous, makes the rest of his teammates play harder.

UPDATE fellas, looks like Varejao's going to remain a Cav. :(

According to a source close to Varejao, he has signed an offer sheet with the Charlotte Bobcats worth $11.3 million over the next two seasons with an option for a third season that could make the deal worth $17.4 million. The Cavs have not received the offer sheet, but team sources said they probably will match the offer on the restricted free agent.

The Bobcats used their $5.3 million mid-level exception to sign Varejao, so that's what the Cavs would pay him this season. Varejao signed the deal Monday in Charlotte and is expected to fly to the Los Angeles headquarters of his agent, Dan Fegan, today.

If Wallace was being paid the MLE, it wouldn't be so bad - i'd say it's a pretty decent deal, but since he's being paid 15 mil a season, i'd say that Wallace experiment is working out horribly.

MangoKidHoops 12-05-2007 08:49 AM

That sucks he's going to remain a Cav. He's going to provide a real energy spark for that team. He's more of a difference maker than people let on.

Here's a question for Raptors fans: Who would you rather have - Kapono or Varejao?

Damn you. However, I think Varejao is out of shape right now so he won't be providing that immediate spark they need.

As to who would I rather have. I'd take Kapono. He allows us to do more on the offensive end of the game. We're able to have better spacing on the floor when he and Parker are on at the same time. Defensively, well he's atrocious, but the last time I looked basketball and well defense are all team oriented so what he does 1 on 1 does not concern me.
