Default Lakers get Adam Morrison

Bobcats send Morrison to Lakers for Radmanovic - NBA - Yahoo! Canada Sports

Quote:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Charlotte Bobcats traded managing partner Michael Jordan’s first draft pick on Saturday, sending struggling forward Adam Morrison and reserve guard Shannon Brown to the Los Angeles Lakers for forward Vladimir Radmanovic.

Jordan’s first major decision after becoming part owner with the final say on all basketball decisions was taking Morrison with the third overall pick in the 2006 draft.

The former Gonzaga star known in college for his shaggy hair and thin mustache never lived up to expectations, and had fallen out of favor with first-year coach Larry Brown. He was jettisoned for the 6-foot-10 Radmanovic, who was averaging 5.9 points and 2.5 rebounds a game with the Lakers.

“We definitely wish him well,” Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins said of Morrison. “He’s a good kid and hopefully he gets an opportunity to play. You never know, he might get a chance to win a (championship) ring.”

The move is the third trade the Bobcats have made this season in a roster shakeup under Brown, who is trying to get the fifth-year Bobcats to the playoffs for the first time.

Morrison and Brown were never a good fit. Morrison’s defensive deficiencies didn’t mesh with Brown’s style, and Morrison had failed to hit shots consistently, struggling in a starting role the past four games after small forward Gerald Wallace suffered a partially collapsed lung and a broken rib against the Lakers on Jan. 27.

Morrison, who cut his trademark hair short before this season, will get a chance to crack the Lakers’ rotation and become an outside scoring threat. Morrison, who averaged a nation-best 28.1 points for Gonzaga in 2005-06, missed all of last season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in a preseason game.

Morrison, due about $5.3 million next season, was averaging just 4.5 points while shooting 36 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-10 Radmanovic, who is owed $6.5 million in the final year of his deal next season, gives the Bobcats more depth up front. Higgins said Radmanovic can play both small and power forward.

“Being a 6-10 guy, obviously he brings some height as well as some athleticism,” Higgins said. “He’s guy that can make some shots. I think he will fit in with our current roster well.”

Shannon Brown was signed in the offseason and had played sparingly until Friday night, when he committed a turnover and had a shot blocked in the closing seconds of a 102-97 loss to Atlanta. A groin injury to starting shooting guard Raja Bell put Brown into the lineup.

Higgins said they were arranging for Radmanovic to fly from Cleveland, where the Lakers play the Cavaliers on Sunday, to Miami. The Bobcats play the Heat Sunday night.
Gets rid of that nasty contract. Now see if Morrison can hit some shots with the Lakers.

Mostly a financial move for Lakers. Gives them more flexibility to sign Ariza and Odom this year. Cats get a 3 who can actually play in GWall's absence. Still kind of a dumb move though, VladRad's contract sucks

If Morrison cant shoot a high % in LA hes going to be out of the league very very soon. Hes gonna get all the open looks hes wanted with Kobe on the floor.

Thats if he plays.

And with CHA, WTF are they doing? They didnt spend all their cap space in their first few years to get Diaw and Radmanovic's bloated contracts instead of trying to get a true star player? Jordan and their GM blow.

Seems like a win-win that has a slight chance of paying off for both teams

It's unreal how much of a bust Morrison has been. I thaught he'd be a pretty decent player.

I really have a feeling that if he doesn't get a deal done for JO it will be pretty quiet. Maybe a minor deal involving Moon and/or AP+ maybe solomon. But it's not like we would get much for any of them.

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling Morrison will flourish in LA.

To be fair, Morrison lost a season to injury. In his first year he put up some pretty nice scoring numbers, albeit inconsistently and at a relatively low field goal percentage.

Lakers get the better end of the deal, never liked Radmanovic in LA.

At least Charlotte is doing something and trying to re tool their team which is something we can't say for BC and the Raps

Yeah, for some reason, I'm with you on this one. I think Kobe's leadership will help Morrison. Then again, I am also the guy who wanted him as the #1 pick that year, so I guess I'm hoping for some sort of redemption at some point in his career...

Morrison seems a bit fragile mentally. Hence the rainy-face episodes. He might wilt under Kobe's glare.

Yeah, you could be right on this. It really could go either way. He could be the guy who breaks down constantly on the bench and on the court, but it could also make him tougher and bring out an "I'll show you" mentality. I guess if I had to lean one way, I'd probably lean to what you're thinking, but I hope Kobe brings him out of his shell. Getting a lot of good looks will help his confidence too.

You can't discount the effect PJ could have on Morrison though. He's smart enough to know how to handle the guy's psyche. If any coach can turn Morrison into a legit NBAer it's Jackson and the triangle.

Yeah, you know it's going to be really interesting to see what happens with this trade. So many factors come into play regarding Morrison, it will make for a great story.

The only way Morrison gets minutes right now though is if he outplays Walton in practice and then starts because I dont think he'll get minutes as a backup over Vujacic, or Ariza especially.

i wouldn't be surprised if the Lakers make him better the same way they did with Ariza, on thing about hte Lakers organization is that they get the most out of the players when there on the court,

I dunno, Phil does some strange things at times and keeps winning. I wouldn't be surprised if he puts him out there, if nothing else, to keep guys on their toes.
