Default Bill Russell jumps over a guy to make a layup

This is from his college days. And it's fucking crazy.

I heard that Russell and Chamberlain were one of the best in the United States in high jumping in their times.

Russell was 7th in the world at high jump in his day from what I hear but high jump and NBA ball are very different.

Russel stayed out of the limelight for years. He thought the Boston people were much more comfortable cheering for the white Larry Bird than their black former star.

I'm hoping that is not the case anymore. Something must have convinced him because he is at a lot of games and giving a lot more interviews. When I was looking him up in the 70's (high school) , there was very little to be found.

Good to see he has embraced his role as NBA Legend. When he showed up at the Nets/Raptors playoff game in 07, I was tearing up. He walked right past me.

That lay up is INSANE.

He talked about that before. Media and people didn't like him leading and coaching the Celtics, even with the championships. The day after he retired he moved back to California and didn't even show up for his jersey retirement.

I was there as well, and even though I didn't get close to him, I put that as one of my greatest memories at a sporting event.

The interview with Bill Simmons last week delved into how he loved the Celtics, but had to separate that from the city in which they played. Through 11 championships they had poor coverage, half empty stands, and fans always questioning the racial makeup of the team. When Russell won a championship as a coach, Red was immediately questioned whether he might consider a coaching change. It is just recently that the city and the legend have been able to develop something of a relationship.

Funny how they all like to sit on the laurels of Tradition in Boston, when that very tradition they mistreated while it was happening. Sad.
