Pistons Big Ben and the Pistons: Can they Win?

Quote:
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Ben Wallace needed some help backing away from the idea of retirement and two old friends in Detroit were ready to help.

The four-time All-Star was ready to walk away from the game when he was bought out by Phoenix in the aftermath of the Shaquille O'Neal trade. Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton, his former teammates with the Pistons, had other ideas.

Wallace

"I think Tayshaun called me first, but they were both giving me some coaching," Wallace said.

That was more than enough to convince Wallace that the time was right for his return to Detroit to reunite with the two other cogs from Detroit's most recent heyday. Wallace, who played for the Pistons from 2001-06, signed a free-agent deal Wednesday.

"It's great to be back," Wallace said. "My career took off when I was here, and I'm ready to see what will happen this time."

Wallace was one of Detroit's most popular athletes during his stint with the Pistons, especially after Detroit's 2004 championship and near-miss in 2005. That changed after the hardworking rebounder signed a big free-agent deal with division-rival Chicago in the summer of 2006.

Over the last three years, he has been booed loudly at the Palace, even when he was named to the franchise's 50th anniversary team. Wallace, though, sees that as a positive.

"I loved hearing how loud they cheered me, and I loved hearing how loud they booed me," he said. "That just meant they missed me a lot."

Wallace never had the expected impact with Chicago, and while he was more of a defensive force after a trade to Cleveland, injuries ruined his time with the Cavaliers. That's how he ended up in the O'Neal trade and then the Suns didn't want to keep him. Wallace doesn't regret his decision to leave.

"My run in Detroit was done, so it was time to go," he said. "I got to play in some new systems, and learn two new cities, and I got to play with a lot of great players. I wouldn't change it."

While Wallace will be reunited with Hamilton and Prince, he won't see other familiar faces from his run with Detroit. Antonio McDyess (San Antonio) and Rasheed Wallace (Boston) left this summer, and, most important, Chauncey Billups was traded to Denver early last season.

"Chauncey was the kind of guy that could go to any team in the league and make a positive impact," Wallace said. "It was great to see what he could do in Denver."

He will recognize new coach John Kuester from their days in Cleveland as well as fellow newcomer Ben Gordon, who came over from Chicago.

"I can't even tell you what Ben is capable of doing here, because there's no one in the league that works harder on their game than he does," Wallace said. "He'll be in the gym when you go home for the night, and when you come back, you'll have to drag him away from the court."

Wallace said he won't make any effort to get his iconic No. 3 back from Rodney Stuckey, because he feels he's changed over the last three years.

"They are getting the 35-year-old Ben Wallace now, and my hair isn't as long, and it certainly isn't as dark any more," he said. "They haven't told me anything about my role, and I'm not worried. When they call my number, I'll play the same way I always play."

The Pistons won't be counting on that style bringing four more Defensive Player of the Year awards, but anything close to his best would help solidify a questionable frontcourt.

My question is with all the changes the Pistons are making and with the recent signing of Ben Wallace, I am left to wonder what will become of the Pistons. I also read that Big Ben will be their fifth Big Man option. I think with the veteran experience and leadership Big Ben brings on and off the court, the Pistons might actually make the playoffs.
Your thoughts?

lol, where did you read he would be the 5th option? I see them going really really really small.

PG - Stuckey
SG - Gordon
SF - Prince
PF - Charlie V
C - Wallace

Since the signing of Gordon there is no doubt in my mind that Detroit trades Hamilton. If they do not, they will have a team break down and egos will fly.

Cheers

I actually see Gordon coming off the bench. He can play both the one and two and has shown time and time again that he's good and comfortable in that role.

If they make the playoffs they won't exactly be a force.

Not convinced the Pistons can/will make any noise this season. They're now an offense team, but they will probably get burned on the other end. Since 4th place down is not a lock they could make the playoffs, but im interested to see how all the pieces fit together. Ben Wallace doesn't seem to have much to offer, but he will provide leadership/experience esp. for the young bigs.

I've heard Kwame Brown is supposed to start. So Brown, Wilcox, Summers, Villanueva are all ahead of Big Ben on the depth chart.

LOL - ok no way summers or Wilcox make it a head of Big Ben on the depth chart. That is virtually a promise. Once the season starts and Kwame starts playing lame basketball like he has his whole career, you will.

Gordon starts in Detroit, he wouldn't have signed here to be a bench player, if Rip is still on the roster at the beginning of the season I will be questions management in Detroit.

Cheers

I'm really excited to see the Pistons play. It's unpredictable whether they'll be good or a big mess just like last season.

KWAMAAAAAY BROWN. The guy is a bona fide scrub, he can't play, no disrespect but I'm sorry to say the man cannot play the game of basketball. He has small hands, he can't catch the ball, he's got bad feet, he can't really move, even though he's mobile he doesn't really know what he's doing, he doesn't have a post move that he puts to memory that he can do 2 times in a row. He has no game whatsoever, plays no defense, doesn't have the heart the passion or anything that comes with it, and your telling us that he is starting? Please send this guy to the D-League.

While signing the contract Gordon agreed that he would be bench. RIP will still be starting for Pistons. Big Ben won't be starting either unless he shows amazing recovery from his injuries and brings his 2004 defensive game back. But having Ben Wallace in the team will boost the spirits of RIP and Tay. Pistons will never trade RIP unless it is for an all star or an amazing SG.

They'll trade Rip if this fails like the Iverson experiment which it probably will.

I heard that rumor but I didn't think Rip will be traded before the deadline. They want to see if Ben Gordon can be a reliable sixth man. The Pistons will gonot do very well.

you need a really good starting lineup before you have a really good bench. hmm, Boozer in Detroit would make a lot of sense since the aquisition of Gordon.

Cheers
