Default Best Players to Play the Game

Who really is the greatest player of all time? With all of the different positions and all of the different statistical categories, it's as hard as baseball or football. The argument rages on as no player has ever dominated in every single statistical category that is counted or not counted. The one player who I believe has potential to be one of the best who is currently in the NBA is Lebron James as I believe he has the ability to average a triple double, a steal and a block. I've decided to make an All-NBA roster to help clear this up.

G- Michael Jordan G-Jerry West F- Larry Bird F- Kareem C- Wilt the Stilt
Bench
G- Oscar Robertson G- Magic Johnson F-Julius Erving F- Charles Barkley C- Shaquille O'Neal

Wildcards
Bill Russel, Shaquille O'Neal, Lebron James, Karl Malone, Elgin Baylor

Who's on your all time team? I believe Wilt is the best of all time.

The only problem I have with Wilt is that the current goaltending rules were not in place during his heyday. His 100 point game was possible because he used a lot of his players shots as ally-oops.

You get a lot of squirmy faces when you take something away from a legend...and he wasnt cheating...but could he get 100 points today? Or some of his crazy numbers?

I look at every other player on that list and think they would dominate todays game like they did their own era....well, except that MJ had those sweet illegal defense rules to allow him one-on-ones for most of the game. I still think MJ would dominate, but some of those scoring records might be diminished.

Just the same, thats a good list. I might switch Magic and West.

heh.

PG - Jason Kidd
SG - Kobe Bryant
SF - Lebron James
PF - Karl Malobe
C - Hakeem

Older players don't hold a candle to new players.

I doubt he could do that today. I hear that back in the day, he was by far the strongest player and could probably tear down the rim but he just did soft dunks. He was not one dimensional and a great rebounder. These days in the NBA, he might only get 20 and 15.

That's true, although I would put Jordan above Kobe.

Anyways, whenever i play this game I always assume that the players from the 60's that were proportionately better than the average player then, would be the same proportion as now.

Otherwise they don't stand a chance in hell

I know.

You have to make two lists really. Caparitively against thier peers, and one for right here, right now.

Oscar Robertson becomes the best ever in my eyes, then Wilts domination.

Magic would be the starting PG on the all time list hands down.

The Big O averaged a triple double for his career...Just thought I'd put that out there.

Magic, Robertson, Jordan, Duncan and Chamberlain

Big O needs to be in the top five and so I slid MJ over to the forward spot. If you don't like then slide Magic over there, he played every position including center at an elite level.

Bill Russell made the game what it is today. And he won enough rings to decorate a christmas tree while doing so. He has to make the list. Considering Wilt couldn't beat him, that kinda says something to me.

Not to downplay Big O's triple-double season or anything, but the number of possessions per game was significantly higher than it is today, the game was much faster. I read an article on NBA.com a while back that pro-rated Lebron's stats to what he would have averaged had he been playing in Big O's era, and they calculated he'd be averaging 40/11/10. The triple double season is epic, monumental even, but I don't think it's reason enough to put him ahead of guys like Lebron and Kobe.

Magic
Kobe
Jordan
Duncan
Shaq

I threw in Shaq instead of Wilt because I don't think Wilt's filthy domination necessarily would have translated to today's game. Shaq has dominated as much as a player could possibly dominate in today's league, and he could have easily been as dominant as Wilt had he played in Wilt's era.

Substitute Bird for Kobe and I'm on-side.
Kobe is really just a carbon copy of Jordan and you've already got the original.

No, he deserves to be ahead of James because of his career as a whole? How many years has LBJ been in the league again?

...And how did they reach those numbers? Just because some dude says "40/11/10" doesn't mean its worth anything. Why didn't anyone else do what the Big O did back then if it meant nothing?

I actually think he's better than Magic. Big O> Magic
Lebron has the potential because of his athleticism and skill set to dominate in every single category and possibly be the greatest of all time, but right now he's on the reserves.

How so? Explain. My top 3 in order are Oscar Robertson because he could do everything, Magic Johnson because of his versatility and skill THEN John Stockton because, well um............. it's John Stockton!

i think in order to be considered "the best of all time" you need some sort of proof... like a championship ring.
