delet please?

MrClutch 06-26-2012 08:23 PM

this just makes the draft harder to analyze who they want

ClutchCity 06-26-2012 08:23 PM

Detroit traded a first rounder too? WTF? And what is Charlotte thinking acquiring Gordon? They already have Augustin and Kemba.

Carlos Danger 06-26-2012 08:24 PM

Jeff with the scoop!

I'd say Charlotte is the winner here. Maggette will be 33 this year, while Gordon is/will be turning 29. So they get younger, which is key for a rebuilding team such as the Cats. Both guys are fairly close stats wise.

The key is the 1st rounder. Does "protected" mean that if it's a top 3 they don't get it? If it's next year, I can't see Pistons being that low. Still, top 15 pick for Charlotte along with what they have.

Isn't Augustin a UFA this July?

Detroit does this for financial reasons. Maggette expires next summer, while Gordon has a player option for the 2013/14 season that is worth over $13 million. YIKES!!! :police: He will definitely excercise that player option.

Gordon is the better player though. He still hits bombs at a good clip, and if he got more touches, he could give you 15ppg off the bench. He'd actually be a decent bench player for the Raptors to pursue...IF HIS CONTRACT WAS REDUCED BY ABOUT 50%.

Almost certain now that Charlotte keeps the pick to draft MKG, Barnes or Robinson

Ok I guess it's good for Detroit then. But what is Charlotte thinking LOL

I lol'd at that pic you posted, jeff. MJ is a HORRIBLE GM/owner.

I guess we won't know what Charlotte is doing until we know the details of the protection clause. If it is only top 3 or top 5 protected, then Charlotte might still get a lotto out of this, since Detroit probably won't make the playoffs in the next couple of years but is also good enough to avoid the top 5 of the draft (unless the ping pong balls provide luck).

So, in that scenario, MJ is essentially paying $13 mill for a mid to late lotto pick from Detroit.

Good call, my mistake.

MJ is despite for talent. Ben Gordon has talent, just one ugly motherfucker of a contract. :reporter:

Bill Haverchuck 06-26-2012 09:06 PM

The pick is lottery protected in 2013. And the following information was added to Woj's updated article on the trade....
Quote:

The Pistons' draft pick is also protected through the eighth selection in 2014 and No. 1 in 2015. It is unprotected if the deal extends to 2016.
So, this could net MJ a decent pick if Detroit continues to struggle a bit. It sucks for MJ if Detroit make the playoffs next year, because then Charlotte gets Detroit's mid or late 1st rounder. But, if Detroit misses the playoffs the next two seasons (quite possible), there is a good chance Charlotte gets a lotto in the 9-14 range during the 2014 draft.

Now, if MJ got really lucky, Detroit would suck hard for the next 3 seasons, the pick would remain protected in 2013 and 2014, and then eventually Charlotte would get a high lotto in 2015. MJ's paying Gordon $13 mill in exchange for the right to bet on Detroit sucking. Worst case scenario he pays a lot of money for a pick outside the lotto.

The title of this thread is wrong. No pick went to DET.

This:

Quote:

@sam_amick: "According to source, the pick is lottery protected next year, top 8 in 2014, No. 1 protected in 2015 and unprotected in 2016"
This essentially means CHA will get a future lotto pick since its extremely unlikely DET makes the playoffs next year, and they got the better talent in the deal in Gordon. Yes, Gordon has an extra year on his deal than Maggette, but CHA needed to take on salary because they only have like 5 guys on their team come 2013/14. Great deal for CHA.

DET sheds salary. But they still wont have any cap flexibility come next offseason even with Maggette off the books right? If they dont, then what was the point?

Why do you think they won't have cap flexibility?

After this trade, the Pistons will be well under the cap during the summer of 2013. And they can get even further under by using the amnesty on Charlie, if they finally choose to do so.

First read I got the pick going the other way and I thought MJ should be banned from nba dealing ...
This way, it's a bad trade for Detroit, unless they have some moves planned to improve the team. It's almost guaranteed the pick will be top 10, and imagine if Detroit wins the lottery and moves up to a 2-3 spot in three years. When will GMs realize that you just don't take that chance.

Gordon is also the better player, but it's interesting that Charlotte is basically committing to either trade robinson, or move their pick now. Looks more and more like mkg will fall to 5th and unless the kings want Drummond, we may have a chance to get him, I doubt sac really wants mkg all that badly, they're pretty stacked on the wings. I wonder if Jose would interest them, would be a great fit for them
