Default Barkley: Kidd at end of the road

Quote:
Jason Kidd will be looking for one last big payday and/or a chance to win a championship in free agency this summer. TNT's Charles Barkley, who called Kidd "the best leader in basketball" after last season's blockbuster trade, doesn't think the future Hall of Famer can be anything more than a bit player on a title team now. "Jason Kidd has been a great player," Barkley said. "He's been a Hall of Famer, but he's at the end of the road." Interrupted Kenny Smith, who won two titles as Hakeem Olajuwon's point guard: "He still can lead a team, run a team." But Barkley isn't buying that.

I think he can still be effective for a top tier team off of the bench, but I wonder if his ego will allow him to accept that kind of role.

I'm sorry but Kidd should go down with KG and VC as the most overrated "superstars" or their era.

he may be past his prime, but no one 'should' retire unless they want to or they can't get a gig. i don't think either of those situations are in play for kidd.

I'd say he has another year in him at least. His minutes should definitely be cut though.

Once a point guard reaches a certain level of immobility the writing is on the wall. Even the great ones end up looking so ordinary. The damage comes primarily on defense, but that then effects their complete game. I still don't know how Stockton did what he did in terms of extending his career. He was just built perfectly that way, and must have worked like a dog.

since when should a veteran PG who puts up 9/9/6, and played in 81 games retire?
sure, Kidd isnt the same calibre player he was 5 years ago, but he's still an effective floor leader.

Dallas wasnt the type of team for him... I'm sure they're kicking themselves for ditching Harris, but thats not Kidd's fault.

he's still a triple/double threat and has a few more good years left in him.
you put him on a slower half court offense and he'll look 3 years younger.

That's the thing though, he's never been suited to the half court game. Dallas wanted a guy who had mastered the art of the fast break and they thought Jason Kidd would be that guy.

When the team does slow it down to the half court he can't beat guys off the dribble, and he can't shoot off the dribble so it's hard for him to be effective when the team isn't running. Not to mention he's been turning the ball over these playoffs like it's going out of style. Half court defensive sets are even worse for him - he was severely exposed by Tony Parker and Chauncey Billups these playoffs. Lesser role, sure. He's not fit to lead a team anymore though.

He's probably got 2 years left in him. But he should be a backup imo.

VC isn't a superstar. He had the potential to be one early on, but he never really turned into that superstar role.

The best thing for him to do now is go to a team that is on the verge of winning the Championship but needs him to come off the bench to help them out. He prolly won't get over the MLE IMO

Endorsement deals, his own series of shoes, his own clothing line, opposing fans buying tickets just to see him play, comparisons to MJ and Kobe, etc. The magic may have been short-lived but you can't deny that VC was a superstar.

Was. That's what i meant with "he had the potential to be". What i mean is a superstar to me is someone who has that for 10-15 yrs and is an MVP candidate at least a few times, goes deep into the playoffs several times, elevates his teams consistently over a whole career not only at 22yrs old. Carter hasn't done that since 2002 imo (elevate his teams). After his first 4-5 seasons, this guy has been beyond a disapointment. His attitude stinks, and his work ethic has always been in question.

Not disputing any of that. As much as he's the epitome of the "what if" player, he was on top of the basketball world for 3-4 seasons.

On top? He was never an MVP candidate back then, he never won a scoring title, only helped win one playoff series. In a league that included Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, Kidd and others. He wasn't on top. If it wans't for the 2000 dunk contest, VC would have just been another player with leaping ability and promise.

He skated on that 2000 dunk competition for a few years, but his true colours shined through eventually.

He was easily the most popular player in the league. In terms of publicity, the guy was a God.

Kidd killed DAL with his lack of penetration and the fact that he seemed to scared to go to the rim.

He reminded me of an injured Jose actually lol.....

LOL vince isnt on top if u consider the old grant hill not on top. He averaged 28 6 and 6 () ... the only playoff series win in franchise history and 1 shot away from the Eastern Conf. finals.. #1 in all-star voting for so many years.. and was absolutely clutch (hit so many buzzer beaters).

How was he skating on that dunk contest to average 6 boards and 6 assists a game? lol. Whatever.
