Wizards Arenas Opts Out of Final Year

Anyone really surprised? Wizards shouldn't be too worried though seeing how he's said that he wants to return. The deal breaker being is whether or not they can re-sign Jamieson. If so, then its as good as gold that Arenas will likely return, but if they can't re-sign Antawn then Wiz fans should be very nervous.

Arenas can begin negotiating with any team on July 1. While he has expressed a desire to remain with the Wizards, he has also said he won't return unless the team also re-signs Antawn Jamison, who is also set to become a free agent.

Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld has said he wants to re-sign both Arenas and Jamison.

Hmm. Get Wizards to sign Arenas to a 10M<ish 3-4 year contract, trade to us for Ford/+Calderon/other intangibles.

Arenas will get closer to $20 million per season. Ten million would be an insulting offer to someone of his calibre.

He said he would sign for less if he'd be with Jamison. Around the 10M area..
Wouldn't hurt signing and trading for the same amount?
Damn..20M..? I'd rather go for Jamison...

That's because he at least wants the keep the team intact. If he's not gonna sign back with the Wiz, he's gonna go for his on the open market

No thank you to the overpaid, defenseless chucker who's team did better without him this year.

Best move for Wizards would be to S&T with someone like the Clippers and get back their draft pick.

its true...
he is expecting 16+ at least.
he's opting out of the 10 mil he's owed for next season, so that right there says it all... he's seeing dollar signs right now.

I wouldn't try making a run at him either. I was never a big fan of him. I'd definitely go with AJ instead.

I agree! He's a very talented player. But giving him 15-20 million a year to piss and moan would be a big big mistake. And he hasn't played much in the last year and a half. And who knows if he'll ever be the same? I have a feeling he knows he'll never be the same and he's trying to get as much as he can while he still can. If he didn't opt out and he had a piss poor season then he wouldn't get as much. He came back for the playoffs and had to sit out after game 3 ! He may be done!! Not only that, after he dissed Jose last season that would be dicy at best unless you get rid of Calderon which i don't want especially for a selfish risk!
