Nuggets Andre Iguodala to opt out and become a FA

Quote:
Denver Nuggets forward Andre Iguodala has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract and enter free agency, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

Andre Iguodala averaged 13 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists this season. (Getty Images)Iguodala, 29, promises to be one of the most desired players on the summer market. His agent, Rob Pelinka, informed Denver CEO Josh Kroenke of the plan in a meeting on Thursday in Los Angeles.

"We are fully aware of Andre's intentions and he's well aware of how much we want him back," Kroenke told Yahoo! Sports Friday afternoon. "Andre us a huge priority for our organization."

Iguodala will bypass the $15.9 million owed him next season and will be eligible to sign a new four-year deal elsewhere or sign an extension up to five years with the Nuggets.

Iguodala has until June 25 to exercise the early termination clause on his contract, and virtually all players wait until the deadline to file the necessary paperwork. Without triggering the opt-out cause, Iguodala could only sign a three-year extension with Denver.

After superstars Dwight Howard and Chris Paul, Iguodala will be a target for several teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Hornets, league sources said.

Kroenke expressed a strong desire to keep Iguodala, but the losses of general manager Masai Ujiri and coach George Karl makes the franchise's future a little murky. Nevertheless, Kroenke is expected to have a GM and coach hired with time to formulate a vision and offer to try to keep Iguodala in Denver.

Iguodala has previously expressed a strong fondness for the Nuggets organization and his teammates, and his decision to opt out could ultimately lead to him signing an extension to stay in Denver.

After Iguodala joined the Nuggets as part of last summer's four-way Howard blockbuster, the franchise pushed higher on its rise as a Western Conference contender. As the Philadelphia 76ers struggled without his presence, Iguodala's all-around abilities and leadership meshed perfectly with a young Nuggets roster.

Iguodala played his best basketball in the playoffs for Denver, averaging 18 points, eight rebounds, 5.3 assists and two steals in the six-game loss to the Golden State Warriors. For the season, Iguodala – an extremely versatile defender – averaged 13 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

Iguodala played his first eight NBA seasons for the 76ers.

Denver is going to slowly fall apart and start to sell (trade) a lot of their assets.

We need to get on Ty Lawson A-F*CKING-SAP!

say whaaaaaa?? Hope that was sarcastic!! lmao

Gallinari 24
Lawson 25
Fournier 20
Koufos 24
Faried 23
Randolph 23
Mcgee 25
Mozgov 26
Chandler 26
Brewer 27
AI 29
Hamilton 23
Stone 25
Miller 21

Average age is 24.4 years old, take out AI and Brewer, that number goes slightly down. Plus they have their 1st this year and next, Plus they have no contracts over 11mil (now that AI has opted opt).

Point is the Nuggets will be ok. There won't be a dumping of young assets - if anything they can probably package some and go for an all-star AND they can finally get a coach that can do more than just make the playoffs.

***MU did a very nice job there***

Take year 5 out of the equation, are there not better opportunities for AI to win a championship elsewhere? Or do you think the Nugs' current roster can compete for the title as is? (Before AI gets much older as he's starting to come down the backside of his career)

Shame to watch an exciting team slowly disintegrate. Must suck to be a Nuggets fan.

I say he goes back to Denver but they'll pretty much need to max him out. If Detroit doesn't draft a wing player, I could see them throwing all their cap money at him and they have enough to max him out. If I'm Denver, I resign him even if it takes a max deal to keep him. If he bolts, they're in a bad place as far as replacing him is concerned. They'll be on their hands and knees begging for Kevin Martin to come.

Wonder what will happen with Chandler if AI does resign and Danilo becomes healthy...will he stay as a back-up? I would think a package of players is going to happen, they do need an all star and they do have a lot to work with.

That team is in a really prime position, with 1 or 2 right moves Denver will be able to take that last step up in the West.

AI didn't make that team go, he was a nice cog, very nice cog, in the nuggets system. They still have Chandler and Danilo at the 3, so Denver certainly won't be begging Kmart to come.

I think AI will return, if he doesn't it's certainly not the 'start of the end' for them - they average 24 years of age and that team was second in their division without AI and second in their division with AI. Denver misses Danilo more than they miss AI.

Isn't it? I mean, MU did a great job there and they are going to be fine for years - their 'grizzled vets' are 27, 29 and 37 - gotta love Andre. That team has so much chemistry, it will only get better as only 1 player is over 30 lol.

I actually think the only reason AI opted out is to have more years in Denver. Once Danilo comes back and stays healthy (which would be nice for a change) and another year together, that team is going to be really really tough.
