With the NBA draft just 16 days away on June 26, teams around the league are jockeying for position with the hope that they can move up or even acquire assets in moving down in the draft order.

According to a report by Chad Ford of ESPN.com, the Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls are in discussions over possibly swapping some of their picks.

The aforementioned move would see the Nuggets send their No. 11 pick to the Bulls for their No. 16 and 19 picks.
Quote:
Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post reported last week that general manager Tim Connelly had been making a “fair share of calls” concerning the No. 11 pick and moving it to acquire a veteran talent.

That pick is the highest the Nuggets have gone since taking Carmelo Anthony out of Syracuse University in 2003.

“I don’t think things will pick up until the next week or so,” Connelly said. “But after a relatively quiet trade deadline, I think we’ll see a more active build-up to the draft. I would imagine we’ll have a lot of trades.”

Denver finished the regular season with a record of 36-46, good enough for 11th in the Western Conference. They were 13 games back of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Management feels that the team can quickly gather themselves and get back in the postseason picture in 2014-15. Rather than wait for a developing talent out of the draft and hoping he can contribute right away, perhaps the right move is go the veteran route and find someone who can immediately pay dividends.

Ettore Messina will join the coaching staff of the San Antonio Spurs next season, as first reported by Corriere di Bologna's Daniele Labanti and confirmed by Sportando.

Messina was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under Mike Brown during the 11-12 season and was considered last year by the Atlanta Hawks.

Messina was most recently head coach of CSKA Moscow.

David Blatt still has no contract, he is one hell of a coach. Whoever gets him will win the jackpot

If the Heat did that and created a big 4 I think my head would explode. Its bad enough they were able to form their trio and shift the balance of the NBA. All 3 of them are pansies.

imagine if they do that and still go on to lose to the spurs

if they really want to win, they should just sign for the veteran minimum and try to add carmelo, lowry and kevin love. Might create a trend where all star level players start signing 5M contracts, making future cba negotiations easier.

I read that elsewhere a week ago , didn't think much of it but really, that's not far out of reach. These guys make so much money off endorsements that winning a championship just increasing that to the point that an annual tax free salary in Miami becomes quite secondary (like bonus time at work). If that DID happen, and they trot out Allen, Wade, Melo, LBJ, Bosh as a starting 5 - how destructive is that going to be to the entire league?

lebron makes a lot, but wade, and especially Bosh don't. On espn, they were projecting each of them to lose 50-70M for this to work. That's a LOT of money. 95% of the league will not make that much money in their entire career ...

I'm confused, Bosh makes the same as LBJ and Wade slightly less from the Heat. I would think that if all 3 sign for 15 that leaves 15 for 'melo, instead of 3 at 60 that's 4 at 60. Endorsements top up everything else. Can't lose something you don't have, they just make a little less going forward from the team and clean up on endorsements. ESPN is looking at it backwards.

there are some mandatory cap holds, think there's about 13 million in cap holds for empty roster spots, even if everybody opts out. The guy who did the math on espn also considered a scenario where carmelo gets a little more money (as he stands to lose more than the others), lebron, wade and Bosh would have to start at around 11M.

also, they'd get no MLE and they'd have to literally fill their entire roster with minimum players, or they would have to take an even bigger pay cut to give them at least a bit of cash to add some rotation caliber players.

Ok. I can understand that if you're coming from a cap point and strictly nba salary point. I'm looking at it from a yearly earnings point. I just think these stars have figured it out that they can make more from endorsements and outside deals and win by taking less of a salary. I can also see these billionaire owners arranging outside deals during and after these playing times - these players won't make less going forward, just on paper. Seems legacy and winning are more important to LBJ and winning can be contagious. A winning legacy also creates huge opportunities after their playing days are over - look at Michael Jordan who made a fraction of these stars below during his career and now he just joined the Billionaires club according to Forbes. Of course MJ is the pinnacle of success in this regards though LBJ won't be far behind, and the others will do much better than they would than earning a better salary and investing in bars, restaurants and coconut sport drinks - THIS is imho what these guys are after - not just winning championships. 10 + years ago these opportunities did not exist for athletic players - career over pay is over so get as much as they can but nowadays bonafide stars can make so much more when their careers are over if they're smart about it now.

Couple the above with the salary with the tax free state - so earning less is like earning more with another team - which I know you know - lots of opportunity.

The Heat have 1 guaranteed contract @ 2mil (Cole), 3 etos and 2 player options @ 6mil (Haslem/Birdman) combined for this coming season. Yes there are cap holds but Battier is looking like he's going to retire so that 6mil cap hold can go, Haslem will probably P/U his 4.6 mill option so his hold will drop. 5 of the players are on vet mins so they can be signed anytime and I don't think there are limitations even over the cap (fairly certain) and that leaves Allen, Douglas, Jones which could be resigned.

Say LBJ takes 13 mil - last year he made 53 million in endorsements. The more he wins the more he makes in endorsements
Wade takes 13 mil - last year he made 11 million in endorsements. I would say he makes the same
'Melo takes 15 mil - last year he made 8 million in endorsements. Winning and being in tax free Miami that number goes up
Bosh takes 13 mil - last year he made 2.5 million in endorsements. Probably capped but more winning would mean more

Player.....salary (14/15).....Endorsements.....Earnings for '15.....Est Net Worth '14(FORBES Top 100 athletes 2014)
LBJ.........13 mil.................53 mil +..............66 mil +..............250 mil
Wade......13 mil.................11 mil =..............24 mil +..............95 mil
Melo.......15 mil..................8 mil ++..............23 mil ++............80 mil
Bosh.......13 mil.................2.5 mil =.............15.5 mil =..............50 mil

Team 2014-15

First - committed first and options
Cole...........2 mil
Hamilton.....0.9 mil
Andersen....1.4 mil
Haslem.......4.6 mil
..........................total 8.9 mil

Sign via FA
LBJ...........13 mil
Wade........13 mil
Melo.........15 mil
Bosh.........13 mil
.........................total 54 mil + above 8.9 mil = 62.9 (2015 projected max cap 63.2 mil)

Sign via rights
Chalmers....5 mil
Allen..........4.2 mil
Jones.........1.5 mil
Douglas......1.9 mil
.........................total 12.6 + above = 75.5 mil

After everyone else
Lewis..........1 mil vet min (maybe or another player)
Beasley.......1 mil vet min (maybe or another player)
Oden..........1 mil vet min (definitely should keep)
.........................total 3 mil + above 78.5 mil (projected luxury tax 77 mil)

When I look at it this way it seems to make sense when you look at the holistic picture. It's just a possibility but should be able to work IF they really want to.

U act like they made it unfair lol. In the 4 years, they have only won twice and both times they lost was because of lack of depth. That lack of depth was because you guess it, no money to spend on role players . there was a price to pay to take on 3 stars with salaries combining to 60 million. If they add melo, phenomenal startibg group but will have no depth (unless wade became a 6th man)

Nice in depth post Doc. It's actually insane that there is a possibility for all the drama queens to end up playing together. I just hope it doesn't happen because I hate this buddy system crap.

I'm just rambling, not sure if it's feasible but I think if they want to they could make it happen. Seems the Heat have maneuvered for this summer to add somebody. Maybe they go after Love, maybe someone else. Just think they're going to do something interesting that's going to peeve a lot of fans around the league. Not like these 3 aren't in a position net worth wise to take less salary for a bigger return down the road.
