Orlando has a huge trade exception from last summer's Howard deal. I'd try to talk them into taking Bogut, because they have the time to wait and flip him to another team for assets. Orlando might be able to get something good for Bogut later this year.

Philly, Cleveland, Atlanta are all probably rebuilding, and currently have the cap space to take Biedrins or Jefferson, although that could change if they sign someone else. Send Biedrins and Jefferson individually to two of those teams with a future 1st rounder and maybe those teams will accept the contracts without sending anything back.

And if GS ownership is really serious about getting Howard, then send cash along with the players to get somebody to bite.

Don't know that anyone in NBA circles really believed Lakers would NEVER talk sign-and-trade. Kupchak too smart not to explore all options

Good points. Orlando is a brilliant idea.

Expirings have no value for teams with cap space, which is what they are looking for. They'll have to add something -- picks most likely, maybe youngsters.

Which they should do, if Dwight really wants to join.

Bogut is the only of those guys who would normally have value -- but he got injured again, so probably not. He might be done.

Isn't it more difficult to do S&T if you're a tax team? I thought there was something in the new CBA about that?

Yes, there are some new noteworthy difficulties. But these restrictions apply to the team receiving the player who is signed and traded. In this case, they would impact Golden State.

For example, if a team receives a player in a sign-and-trade transaction, that team is confined to remaining below the Apron for the year. The Apron becomes a hard cap on the team's annual salary at 4 million above the luxury tax, which is 75.6 million. Also, when receiving a signed and traded player, they lose the Non-Tax Payer MLE, even if they were in a range that normally would allow them to have it.

GS can deal with those restrictions so long as they send enough salary to the Lakers, like Bogut + Barnes, as I suggested in another post. If the Warriors send that out, they can stay below the Apron after receiving Howard. It could hurt their depth, though, because the hard cap would prevent GS from re-signing Jarrett Jack, unless somebody else is dumped in order to bring them far enough below 75.6.

On the bright side, if GS does the sign and trade with the Lakers to get Howard, they can use Jefferson and Biedrins's contracts in more traditional trades. They would no longer need to find cap space teams for those guys. They could be traded for other teams' contracts, which would give those players' contracts the value that expirings normally have in trades.

Edit - the other difficulty from the CBA is that there is no financial gain for Dwight. The contract would only be 4 years max, with the same raises he could get signing outright as an FA. The benefit is a logistical one, getting him to the team he wants, if he does want to go to GS.

TLDR; Jeffb probably won't bother reading this, but if anybody else cares to know all the balls Golden State's frong office is juggling right now, they're outlined above and in my past couple of posts in this thread.

Source close to #Warriors says they would trade Barnes (+No. 1, Bogut) for #D12… Likeliest scenario: #Lakers asked for Curry, or Barnes+Klay

Haha jeff and bill!

great outlining of the gsw situation bill, thanks. They could be crazy good if they get howard. Those 2 expirings could get them some depth. Afflalo for example? if they have to give up barnes.

I think GSW is out, didn't really think they had a high percentage chance anyways....

Quote:
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly shopping players in order to clear enough cap space to acquire Dwight Howard without doing a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers.

However one source with knowledge of the Warriors’ efforts said the team is intent on clearing cap room regardless of Howard’s decision.

The Warriors are expected to use the room -- if successful in moving the contracts of Andrew Bogut, Andris Biedrins and Richard Jefferson -- to chase another impact free agent such as Andre Iguodala.

According to league sources, the Warriors have offered Bogut, Biedrins and Jefferson to the Hawks, Cavaliers and Jazz.

Well, Lakers are most likely out..

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers have begun to reconsider their resistance to a sign-and-trade involving Dwight Howard.

Howard continues to deliberate his decision, but the Lakers have rising pessimism about his ability and willingness to coexist with Kobe Bryant and Mike D'Antoni.

The Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks are considered the biggest threats to sign away Howard, but the Golden State Warriors have become a legitimate option.

If Howard decides he wants to leave the Lakers, they will "look at everything."

The Lakers want to preserve cap space for 2014 and also would like to decrease their tax burden for the 13-14 season if Howard leaves.
realgm

Personally, I would think Houston has the best chance to nab him. *I bet JC signs there too since they want to play together. *

The Rockets will sign Howard outright.

Then they will trade Asik/Lin to the Hawks for Smith

Then they will sign Jose Calderon for cheap.

The Hawks will trot out a line of:

JC/Harden/Parsons/Smith/Howard with Beverly learning from JC to take over and first man off the bench backing up both pg/sg spots. That line-up coached by McHale is better and more balanced than GSW.

Houston also hurts their big Western rival by taking Howard for nothing and sending Asik/Lin out to the East.

Me too, he's such a great team mate and facilitator, who better to give the rock up to others (especially Howard) than JC. Defense will be a lot easier with Howard behind him as well. If defense is needed more then Beverly can come in and he and Harden can take over the ball handling.

Regardless, he deserves better than some of the treatment he's received from Raps fans and others. I hope he can end his career on a winner - hopefully a contender.

I can't stand him as a player, but he's a great teammate so I agree....hope he gets a chance to win.
