C.J. Watson will opt out of the final year of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets, thereby becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, a league source confirmed.

Watson signed a two-year contract with a player option for the second year before the 2012-13 season.

In terms of free agent contracts, the Nets are limited to the veteran’s minimum because they are over the salary cap.

Dwight Howard and Chris Paul have been in contact with each other in an effort to play for the same team next season, according to sources.

"They would love to play together if somebody can make it happen," one of the sources said.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers do not have the available cap space to allow Howard and Paul to team up. If the preference is to play together with the Clippers, they would have to acquire Howard via a sign-and-trade with the Lakers.

Sources say a trade package centered around Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe for Howard could be possible. Multiple sources insist Griffin is untouchable but he would almost surely be required for the Lakers to agree to a trade.

The Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks all have cap space, though acquiring both players would likely acquire both Howard and Paul to accept less than a full max contract. The Hawks would seemingly have the easiest path to sign both Howard and Paul under that scenario.

Howard has seemingly been uninterested in playing in his hometown of Atlanta.

Both Howard and Paul will be free agents for the first time in their careers this offseason.
Where do posters think they will end up together? Houston or Dallas or will they just go to other teams separately? Will the Lakers and Clippers deal to bring Howard over? Really curious now.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Doc goes to the Clippers to coach, the clippers trade Griffin/Bledsoe for Howard and then trade Jordan for KG (if he chooses to go) and resign Billups.

Paul/Billups/Butler/KG/Howard with Crawford/Barnes off the bench....nice. KG most likely won't happen but I could see the Griffin/Bledsoe for Howard. Good for both teams.

Might be the way the Lakers salvage the Howard trade -get Jordan/Bledsoe.

The Houston Rockets will not pick up contract options Aaron Brooks, Carlos Delfino and Francisco Garcia.

Brooks appeared in 7 games for the Rockets in 2012-13 after joining the team on Mar. 5.

Delfino played in 67 games during his one-year tenure with the Rockets.

Garcia was acquired by the Rockets in a sign-and-trade with the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 21, 2013.

getting ready to sign Howard, the crazy part of this whole scenario is that Howard will stay in L.A with the Clippers

I think the Rockets should target Josh Smith instead, adding him to Asik would make there frontline formidable, plus parsons elevating his game they would still be a serious threat of howard decides to go somewhere else, Houston has to cover there ass and make sure they get something instead of ending up with nothing

LOL That's turrible for NY...give up your defensive anchor? Unless your trading Amare for a defensive center or Pekovic is in on the deal, doesn't make sense to me at all.

Agree that is a bad trade for NY, but does that mean that wolves gave up hope on re-signing Pekovic?

I wouldn't think so, he's a RFA. They are both starting caliber centers in the league - can't see either one coming off the bench. The reporter better double check his info before he spins something from midair.

Nothing is likely to happen until the draft or maybe even july.

Greg Oden and his agent know what everybody else does. If the Miami Heat want to win a third straight NBA title, it might be important to get some size.

Oden is willing to help.

Oden’s agent, Mike Conley, told FOX Sports Florida by phone Friday that the free-agent center remains very interested in signing with the Heat this summer and the feeling is mutual. Conley expects to talk with Heat president Pat Riley when free agency begins July 1 about the 7-foot Oden, the 2007 No. 1 draft pick who hasn’t played in the NBA since December 2009 due to knee problems.

"The Heat need some size, that’s not a secret," Conley said. "Whether it’s in a backup role or whatever, he could help them. I know they’re interested in him and he’s interested in them."

The Heat won their second consecutive title with a 95-88 victory Thursday over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. It was their second straight seven-game series after having defeated the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Pacers exposed Miami s lack of size as 7-2 center Roy Hibbert had a dominant series. The Chicago Bulls also pose some problems for Miami in the East with their size.

"The Miami Heat make sense," Conley said of his client possibly landing there.

Other teams in the mix for Oden include Cleveland, San Antonio, Charlotte and Boston. Along with the Heat, Oden, who played at Ohio State, has most been linked with the Cavaliers.

"He still likes Cleveland, but we’ll have to see what they do in the draft," Conley said of the Cavaliers, who have the No. 1 pick in next Thursday’s draft and could take Maryland center Alex Len or Kentucky forward/center Nerlens Noel.

Oden, 25, has been hampered by numerous knee problems since being taken No. 1 by Portland in the 2007 draft. But he has been continuing to rehab in Columbus, Ohio, and his hometown of Indianapolis.

"He’s doing great. I think he could be ready for the regular-season opener," Conley said. "I’m not sure he’d be ready to play significant minutes. But it would depend on whether the team that he went to wanted him to play right away or not."

Conley said Oden is willing to work out with teams in July, including the Heat. But the agent said he "wouldn’t do contact" in a workout.

Miami will have the taxpayer midlevel exception starting at $3.183 million to pay a free agent this summer. However, some of that money might be needed if the Heat want to re-sign center Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

Andersen’s agent, Mark Bryant, told FOX Sports Florida early in the playoffs that Andersen is hopeful of remaining in Miami. Andersen hasn’t been willing yet to speculate on his future.

Also, Milwaukee center Samuel Dalembert, who will become a free agent July 1, told FOX Sports early in the playoffs he has interest in signing with Miami. The Heat pursued Dalembert as a free agent before the 2011-12 season.

When asked whether Miami’s available amount of $3.183 million would be sufficient to sign Oden, Conley said, "We haven’t gone down that road." The market will determine Oden’s value when free agency gets under way.

"He’s really excited,"’ Conley said about Oden wanting to get back in the NBA. "I’ve never seen him this excited."

Same rumor surfacing again about Oden and the Heat....if Oden is 75% what he was and stays healthy, the Heat will just get that much tougher next year. They need something to counter Hibbert...

....although Dalembert may be the safer bet, rebounds and blocks and doesn't really score - should fit in nicely in South Beach.

Interesting- pure salary dump trade.

CLE in: Shawn Marion, #13

DAL in: #19

Quote:
Also, sources tell SheridanHoops.com the Cavs are in serious discussions to acquire Shawn Marion from Dallas in a lopsided trade that would allow them to move up from No. 19 to No. 13 in the first round by relieving the Mavs of Marion’s $9.3 million salary, allowing Mark Cuban more salary cap flexibility to use on July 1.
