Red face AI eyeing a return to the NBA

Quote:
HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS Ė Happy Birthday, Allen Iverson!

The Answer is 36 today and he wants to play ball.
What a surprise. Birds want to fly. Fish want to swim.
It was 10 years ago this month that Iverson was probably at the peak of his powers, having hoisted an undermanned Sixers squad onto his skinny shoulders and carried them to The Finals against the Lakers and even pulled off that shocking upset in Game 1.

Of course, itís been a 1 1/2 years since Iverson left the NBA, just a few weeks after being voted a starter for the Eastern Conference in the 2010 All-Star Game. He did not play.
Since that time, there was the brief sojourn to play in Turkey, followed by surgery on his leg. But now Iverson says heís completely healed and wants back in the NBA next season.
In an interview with Tzvi Twersky in SLAM Magazine, The Answer says heís ready to deal with the questions:

SLAM: You feel like youíve got a lot of ball left in you?

AI: I think the skyís the limit for me. Thatís my whole personal thing thatís going to go on, just trying to get back and let the fans know I belong and am capable of exciting them like Iíve been doing for all of these years.

SLAM: You think anyone is going to give you the chance?

AI: [Deep breath] I donít know. Weíre going to work hard at it, but like I said, if it doesnít happen, I promise you I wonít sit home on my ass. I wonít do that. Iíll play for somebody.

Surely, at 36, Iverson doesnít think he can be the same dominant player he was at 26 when he was named MVP? Or does he? Wasnít his own perception of himself the problem when he signed on with the Grizzlies in 2009 and then quit after playing just three games? Wasnít that still the case when he returned to the Sixers before walking away from the league?
Is there a place on a roster somewhere in the league for an aging Iverson to work his old magic? More important, is there a way Iverson will allow himself to fit into a subordinate role for one more chance?
Those are the questions. What do you think about The Answer?

yeah some teams with no second stars could've used him off the bench during the long scoring droughts.

He's going on 37yrs old, that alone should open his eyes. The sun is setting on his career, whatever's left of it.

if no one wanted him when he was 35 why would anyone want him when he is 37?

hmmmm... there is a spot opening with ESPN/TNT now that Mark Jackson is departing.... maybe AI can become a color commentator. maybe ESPN is looking to capture the thug audience. its a very underrated group.
the cornrows need to make a comeback though.

It's so easy to kick a guy when he's down and out. It's also funny how quickly we forget that Iverson was an absolute warrior on the court.

He's also the only guy who looked to pass at the All-Star game.

It's a shame that he didn't stick with the Grizz..... can only imagine what he MIGHT have been able to do with that team in these playoffs.

Not really. Now that the Grizz have Tony Allen (all-nba defensive team) playing the SG, I don't think AI would have been a net gain. And, this season, OJ Mayo gave them the outside shooting they desperately needed from the bench (and need more of). I see no net gain. The combo of Tony and OJ gave them defense and offense.

Last year (2009-2010), yeah, it would have been very interesting to see AI stick with the Grizz. They didn't have Tony Allen, Sam Young was younger (no pun intended), and OJ Mayo was starting, so the Grizz had depth problems. If AI could have accepted his 6th man role in 2009-2010, he might have helped the Grizz make the playoffs that year. Back then, that would have been perceived as a huge accomplishment around the league. It would have been interesting to watch.
