Adam Silver Wants To Raise Age Limit To 20 | Hoops Rumors

Quote:
Commissioner Adam Silver would like to change the NBA’s minimum age from 19 to 20, and he’ll take the matter up with the union once it hires a new executive director,*tweets*Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com.*The league and the union tabled the issue during negotiations on the current collective bargaining agreement in 2011 with the intent of circling back to the matter, but turmoil in the union appears to have held up discussions since.

The current rule holds that a player must be at least 19 years old to enter the draft, though 18-year-olds may enter if they turn 19 between the draft and December 31st. If the player is from the U.S., he must also be one year removed from high school.*The league instituted the age limit in time for the 2006 draft after a decade-long trend of players jumping to the NBA immediately after high school. It’s unclear whether the union, which doesn’t appear close to naming an executive director to replace the ousted Billy Hunter, would be supportive of changing the rule.

Ostensibly, NBA players would support a measure that would delay the influx of talented young players eager to take their jobs, but agents, who have reason to seek as many paydays for their clients as possible, may push against a change. If the age limit does go to 20, it would negatively affect the talent in the first draft for which the new rule is in effect.

Still, the 2006 draft, which followed the original imposition of the age limit, produced*LaMarcus Aldridge,*Rajon Rondo,*Rudy Gay*and*Kyle Lowry. There’s no timetable for when any changes to the age limit, if approved, would take effect. The rule will almost certainly remain the same for this year’s draft, and probably for next year’s draft, too.

Is there an age limit right now? I thought the rule was just that you had to be a year removed from high school.

Yeah the only problem I have with the NBA is the officiating.

Eliminate guaranteed contracts. Or at least have an easier buyout. How many teams have a Fields (or worse) on their books and cant move forward?

I hope he follows fiba and implements techs for flopping. And also some type of officiating program to sharpen up these refs.

Team fault for giving him the contract in FA.

NBA players union will never let that happen. Basically the player gets nothing and team gets everything in that situation.

This is an excellent idea. Create parity more by eliminating the draft gambling. Should have been done years ago.

Circumvents the cap but I agree because we are a fairly rich team.

If a team has to buy the player out however... the PA will be all over it. Just means getting paid twice and as said above... anything that circumvents the cap is good for the PA.

I'm 50/50 on this topic. In most sports whether individual or team, you could compete professionally if good enough. I think a player should be allowed to earn a living for themselves and family if they want to be an athlete for their career. Alot of the NBA's biggest stars are either players who entered out of high school or were a one and done because they couldn't enter out of high school. I do think that if a NCAA player decides to declare for the draft,it should only be allowed after their sophomore season at the earliest,no one and done. Either Enter out of high school or after your sophomore season in the NCAA. For international prospects its a bit more challenging and may need an age limit. Off the top of my head I'd suggest that only player's who are 20 or 19 turning 20 in the year of the draft they declare for can enter.

The NBA is in full power grab mode. Which means they are uncertain about the future. Whatever fans don't like, the NBA is acting like a bully and shoving it down our throat.

- You don't like bad officiating? Too bad.
- You don't like bicycle spandex jerseys? Too bad
- You don't like 18-19 year old phenoms stuck in college/euro ?? Too bad
- You don't like contract players waiting for zero hour then walking away? Too bad

I am Silver, here me roar. See that basketball? That's MY NAME on there biatch
