Kyrie Irving vs. Kemba Walker

The popular opinion among Raptor fans seems to be that it's Kyrie Irving or bust this year. Fair enough, he's a sexy prospect, but it's looking less and less likely that he'll be available whenever we end up drafting. With Kyrie coming out and saying he'll probably be playing in the tournament, I think teams will be all over him come draft time.

So, point guard prospect plan B, Kemba Walker. I don't know how this guy is flying under the radar on draft boards. Forget his field goal percentage and the number of shots he puts up, dude is carrying 5 freshmen in a 9 man rotation, and teams are sending doubles at him at the three point line because there isn't a guard in the country that won't have his soul eaten by this guy when he wants to break you down. His shot-creation abilities are big-league, and he's got next-level athleticism.

People liken him to Stephen Curry in that they're seen as shoot-first point guards, but IMO Walker is a lot further ahead than Stephen Curry was when he was drafted. Walker is quicker, faster, stronger, handles the ball better, gets to the rim with ease, and has better court vision.

If I'm BC and Kemba Walker is on the clock when my name is called, I'm picking him. He's running with and carrying a group of freshmen now, I think he'd be a perfect fit right beside our young guys.

We could use a confident finisher. But only if Kyrie and Barnes are gone.

The TNT boys think Walker is the best player in the NCAA

finstock 03-14-2011 03:16 PM

Yep, completely agree, thought. Really warming to the idea of Kemba.

He's such a dynamic scorer and play maker. While he's not the purest of PG prospects, his ability to get into the lane and cause/create havoc - especially in the NBA where defenses are more spread out - could make him an incredible player. Plus he's a proven closer.

Brand spankin new mix.

Kemba may actually end up being our draft pick, if we're picking 3rd or 4th (maybe even 5th).

I remember hearing that BC was scouting him a couple of months back, and one of Kemba's main "weaknesses" is his height, and BC had never shied away from diminuitive PGs .

Kemba Walker with a VERY good first game of the tourney...

18 points (on 11 shots), 12 assists and 8 rebounds.

But I read somewhere he said he wishes to play with Melo, and he'd try to follow his career or something along the lines of that.

Remember.

Worst team usually never gets the top pick.

That being said, this guys a player. Hopefully BC can acquire another lottery pick somehow.

doubt it

the real question is Irving vs Barnes?

I'm starting to lean towards Barnes, just all the struggle this year and he came out of better, it was sink or swim time for him and he came out like a champ, hiting clutch shots and a shooting teh ball from everywhere

big fan of Kyrie Irving, but I have to say this injury has me scared, another Greg Oden in the PG sense, don't want that, but a guy who looks to be chunky and already has injury problems, and to draft a guy based 8 games scares me

I don't know much about Kemba Walker but what I have seen I've liked. So if we get one of Irving, Barnes or Walker I'd be pretty happy. I really, really wish BC would pull a Minnesota move(last years draft), and buy/trade for a second high pick somehow and end up with one of those two PG and Barnes somehow.

Irving may be a better PG in terms of setting an offense. Walker is a pure scorer who can create for himself pretty easily.

Hmmmm.....I think I'd gamble on him and see what he becomes.

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 03-18-2011 01:35 PM

If you haven't watch Walker or want to watch him watch him the next tourney game on Saturday vs Cincinnati. Cincinnati has a very good defense so it will be a nice test for Walker.

Claudius 03-18-2011 01:39 PM

And it's a nice Big East match up!

Yep that also so they know each other. NCAA tourney, good defense, same conference. Good test for Walker.

When Walker plays, you see flashes of an elite distributor. Dude can break down any defender in the country and he gets to the rim with ease so you know the court vision is there. The way UConn's rotation is made up, with 6 freshmen in a 9 man rotation, he's called upon to be the main scorer because he has that next-level scoring arsenal.

I personally am not worried about him being one-dimensional at all.

Perhaps it's my bias on him.

I kinda liken his game to Tyreke. They both have the ability to play PG but should they? Trust me though, I'm intrigued. He's stepping up when it counts and guys like Wade and Roy stepped up heavily in the tourney and showed they had/have talent.

surreyjack 03-18-2011 02:09 PM

Irving is better because he is a pure PG. Kemba is sort of a high volume shooter but I think thats because the rest of his team isn't that great. He showed he can be a good ball distributor in yesterdays game.

Buying another pick would need the boards approval. I don't know if they will be willing to spend a lot of money this off season because they are selling the team.

Kirby 03-19-2011 11:15 PM

Man, Walker looks very short.

DSWC 03-20-2011 01:56 AM

I already put this in the NCAA thread, but I'm totally sold on Kemba.

A couple of knocks against him are his height - BC has never shied away from this
Low Assist to Turnover Ratio - 17 to 4 so far in the tourney
More of a scorer than a passer - As already mentioned in this thread, partially due to need. But I've definitely seen some really nice passes out of him from the few games that I've gotten to see. He sees the floor well, and would have at least a couple more assists if his teammates would hit the open shots that he creates.
