General Feelings About the Draft

If the ping pong balls fall the right way we're going to get a top five pick as it stands now. Not the #1 pick you Kyrie fanboys were hoping for but a top 5 pick nonetheless. I'm more than happy with that - actually I'm excited. With the way things have shaken down so far this tournament I like our chances at getting a very good to great player at 5.

At the beginning of the year it seemed like it was Irving or Sullinger or bust. Then you had Walker, Barnes, Jones, and Valancunias (sp?) step into the fold. Now you have Derrick Williams emerging as a star prospect and not having the number one pick all of a sudden doesn't look like such a bad situation. Someone will drop and a great prospect will fall into our lap at five, it's inevitable. Not just a BPA type situation, but a BPA who will be able to address a glaring need for this team. If Barnes continues playing the way he has this tournament, I think he'll go top three. That's fine with me - as I've watched him more I see him as more of a Marvin Williams than a Brandon Roy. I think one of either Walker or Williams will be there when we pick at five. Both guys are absolute studs and will fill huge holes for us.

Walker is the penetrating, break you right the fuck down point guard that this team has needed since boogie. Dude gets his shot off against anyone and he's a big game player. But Derrick Williams...freak athlete with unlimited defensive and offensive potential. He's as athletic as anyone in the draft and I'm confident he has the tools to be a 3 in this league. He has range, can handle the ball, and he has the size and quickness to lock down threes in the NBA. I'm thinking Danny Granger but tougher and more athletic. Shawn Marion with more offense. Another big game player - huge And-1 against Texas and taking a big steamer on Duke in the Sweet 16. He'll be a great rebounder from the wing so he'll fit well next to Andrea.

Have to get back to work now. But I'm excited boys. Hope you all are too.

Edit: boys and girls

The same thing happens just about every year. It's the worst draft in history - the worst draft in history. Then the tourney comes and everyone starts licking their chops.

Talent is talent, especially when you desperately need some talent.

And don't count us out for the #1 pick. We weren't supposed to get it the last time we got it. The chances aren't that bad.

I'm in a similar boat regarding Irving. I'm starting to think that someone else might work out better, particularly when you consider the energy. Guys like Walker and Williams do look pretty promising, and could easily end up being the better picks down the road. Along with the luck of the ping pong balls, there has to be some luck regarding the right fit for players, and the way their bodies hold up while they develop into something.

Just as much chance to get the 8th pick.

Just saying.

There is a chance. It is far far far less though. The number one pick depends on one set of probabilities. Dropping to the 8th involves three sets of probabilities, all of which would have odds that are about as bad or worse than our odds at getting number one.

look just because you got it once doesnt mean you will get it everytime you "werent supposed to get it", it doesnt make your chances any better, which are not very good chances at all

Derrick Williams was always in the top 5 on most boards. He didn't just "emerge", he's been doing this all season.

this draft is equal or better than last year

top 3 PG's
Irving/Walker/Knight/Jimmer > Wall/Bledsoe/Valquez

SG's
Turner/Henry/Bradley > Burks/whoever

SF's
Barnes/Terrence Jones and possibly Derrick Williams > Wes Johnson/Aminu/Hayward

PF's
Sullinger/Perry Jones/Henson = Favors/Udoh/Monroe

and this is without all the international players in this years draft, something there was none of last year

the summer league and training camp reports is when i start judging really hard on the players just because they're playing at the NBA quality ball with NBA and d-league built players, right now I'm just enjoying the tournament.

Draft = who really cares.

The draft is only cool when there is a sure fire stud up for grabs.... guys like Shaq, Griffin, Lebron.... etc.

This year you're seeing teams squabble for bragging rights to a player that may or may not be a decent Rotation guy.

You just hope your GM and his scouts pick the right horse.

Is it that bad? I haven't actually watched them perform except for Kemba in the game that's on right now.

Superjudge 04-04-2011 11:40 PM

well I'm not sure. I don't think anyone is Kirbs...

I think it's fairly acceptable to say that there isn't a straight up killer out there though.

It could be a good draft for a team like Toronto to trade down..... they have the pieces to do something fun!

Maybe a good team trades for a guy like Bargnani to fill a void an toronto moves back in the draft but receives a stud in the process?

EggsToTheBBQ 04-10-2011 10:17 AM

A lot of these picks seem to be pure scorers. I wouldn't draft a pure scorer, I don't think that's what we should be looking for.

I still think Terrence Jones could turn into a really nice NBA SF. He does everything well - he just needs to work on his shooting mechanics and shot selection. The Raptors have had a lot of success in those areas, so I think he could be a really good fit on this team.

I also like the idea of drafting a C. Kanter and Valanciunas could both turn into quality starting Cs.
