Draft Profile: Myck Kabongo

Height: 6-1
Position: PG

Strengths: It's tough to talk about the 6’1 Kabongo without discussing his playmaking skills … Kabongo is a special playmaker for others and really likes to look for teammates, whether it’s flashy or a basic kick in the flow of the offense … Plays the type of game that’s very fun to watch … An extremely quick guard, and really excels on the move and looks good in transition … Has very good floor vision, and is capable of making passes that make you say “how did he do/see that”? ... Excellent ball-handler who doesn’t have many problems getting where he needs to on the floor when you add in his speed and shiftiness … Really does a fantastic job of getting in the lane and finding teammates when his penetration draws attention defenders or attention to him … Understands how to play at different speeds and thus is hard to contain off the bounce ... Has an advanced ability to be almost equally effective in the transition game or in half-court sets, which is pretty rare for a young PG ... Feel for the game is impressive … Can operate in the pick and roll effectively … Pretty good athlete, with nice agility, leaping ability, and body control on top of his aforementioned speed and quickness … Also has good length … Is developing a promising 15 foot pull-up jumper, and has solid overall shooting mechanics that sporadically show when spotting up. If he's able to develop an automatic mid range jumper he is going to be a handful to contain … Will get his hands on passes defensively, and has quick reflexes … Shows very good leadership potential, and is a charismatic personality who’s vocal on the court … Will make contributions on the glass, despite his lack of size … Certainly a floor general … A charismatic young man with a reputation for being a strong character guy ... Has considerable upside

Weaknesses: A 6’1 guard with a thin frame, Kabongo is not yet a man physically…He’s not strong right now and it shows when finishing around the rim in traffic and on D when he has to fight through screens and deal with physical play … Although he is an impressive passer and pure point, he can be unselfish to a fault, passing up shots ... Not a true scorer … Also needs to improve as a shooter, as teams will dive screens against him until he proves he can be more of a factor making jumpers … There are also times when Kabongo will attempt to go for the spectacular play when a more simple play is available, particularly as a passer … He has a definite flair to his game, but he will have to tone it down some to be a more steady PG … Although there are some sporadic flashes of a mid-range game with him at times, he needs to continue to work on his floaters and runners to alleviate his lack of long range shooting touch and lack of strength around the rim … Kabongo also is a gambler on D, and doesn’t show great fundamentals or physicality on this end, although his quickness and length allow him to be a pest pressuring the ball at times ...

Projected: Mid-Late Lotto 1st rounder

Thoughts: Well he's not the strongest player out there and is a liaiblity on defense because of his small frame. But his attributes as a floor general and quickness make up for that. A team looking for a good play maker who can see the floor well could really use a player like Kabongo.

Raptors: Raptors are projected for 1-5th pick, but if we can get a mid 1st rounder I think we should really pick Kabongo up. We are in need of a legit playmaker whose quick and is not afraid to make mistakes with his ball handling ability. We have that in Calerdon, but he is slow and makes easy safe plays. I think its also a plus that he's from Canada, which will make him feel comfortable with the environment.

Thought and Comments?

Last 2 games:
16pts 7asts 4rebs 3tos
13pts 8asts 5rebs 3tos

After 3 slow starts, he's slowly showing life again, but the TO is looking like a concern though.

Have you seen who he's passing to? If he had some higher level teammates I think we would see those TO's drop down a bit.

Despite those high TOs, I rmb seeing those highly profiled PGs also avging around just as many turnovers.

Canadians sure love Texas. Would love to take this guy if we manage to win a few more then expected.

Jeremy 12-30-2011 05:58 PM

Anyway we could make a trade to grab a pick around 10th overall to draft Kabongo along with our other high pick?

Suspended rest of year

Sources: NCAA to suspend Texas guard Myck Kabongo for season

Quote:

Texas guard Myck Kabongo will be suspended by the NCAA for the rest of the season, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

As the NCAA investigated Kabongo's amateur status over the past several months, Texas held Kabongo out of the lineup. The NCAA's investigation has centered around whether Kabongo, a one-time potential NBA first-round draft pick, received impermissible benefits from agent Rich Paul, who represents NBA superstar LeBron James and two former Texas Longhorns players: Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson and San Antonio Spurs guard Cory Joseph.

In most impermissible benefits situations, players usually are suspended from three to 10 games and ordered to repay the amount of the benefits received. In this case, the penalty was made more severe because Kabongo provided inaccurate information to NCAA investigators when he was interviewed, sources with ties to Texas' basketball program said.

The season-long ban is consistent with the penalty applied to former Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant in 2009 when he lied to the NCAA.

The loss of Kabongo is a major blow to an inexperienced Texas team that already has been struggling without its best player. The Longhorns are 6-4, including a shocking loss to NAIA Chaminade in the Maui Invitational last month. Kabongo averaged 9.6 points and team highs of 5.2 assists and 1.3 steals last season.

As Y! Sports reported previously, one element of the probe centered on whether Paul played a role in Kabongo traveling to Cleveland last spring on a trip that included at least one workout with New York-based professional trainer, Jerry Powell. At issue was who paid for Kabongo's travel and expenses, and whether Powell's training was provided without cost.

Powell told Yahoo! Sports in October that an NCAA investigator contacted him about the probe into Paul and Kabongo. Powell said he worked out Kabongo in Cleveland in May, and that Paul wasn't in the gymnasium.

smh, come on dude!

DonMughal 12-20-2012 03:19 AM

Now we can pick him up as a steal in the 2nd round. Niceeeeeeeeeee

Can anyone explain to me what is an impermissible benefit? Is it like free gifts and such from an agent in order to pursuade the player to possibly sign with the agent??? Google isn't being my friend.

Almost anything that doesnt' come from family. Free shoes, free money, free food, free tattoo from random person, free car, free anything.

Kabongo made the big mistake and lied to the NCAA. Never, ever do that.

Claudius 12-20-2012 11:14 AM

There's a huge love fest going on right now trying to say he did something wrong, but shouldn't have been punished that severely.

Like R+B said, it's the fact that he lied. If he was honest, punishment would've likely been less severe.

I don't get it, what's so wrong about that? What if he just got all that free stuff because he's an awsome person and it has nothing to do with ball? :cookie:

crazy thing is i'm friends with duane notice and he told me how he thought kabongo and texas were doing some sketchy business because at one point kabongo uncommitted with texas and three days later recommitted.

Myck Kabongo's suspension has been reduced to 23 games.

Kabongo, sophomore guard for Texas, had been suspended for the entire season.

Kabongo is eligible to return to the Longhorns on Feb. 13 against Iowa State with eight games remaining in the conference schedule.

"Kabongo accepted airfare, personal training instruction and then provided false and misleading information during two separate interviews with university officials," the NCAA said in a statement.

With Kabongo possibly going down in the draft due to his suspension, I'm wondering if we still got a second rounder or if it is gone in the Gay or the Telfaire trade?

I don't think the suspension is going to drop him that far down the draft, especially when he's already played some games this season and showed some of his abilities and he's still going to be at team workouts so all the teams can see him in the end.
