Draft Profile: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Another player to watch for the Raptors. Projected Top 10 pick, SF, Kentucky University. 6-6 216

NBA Comparison: Gerald Wallace

Strengths: Has been at or near the top of his class rankings since his freshman season ... A hard working kid who gets excellent reviews for his character and desire ... Should continue to improve thanks to his strong work ethic ... Relentless defender that has the ability to defend 1-5 at a high school level and 1-4 at the college level ... Equally as good off the ball and in passing lanes ... Excellent defender that understands that defense is about attitude and desire ... 7-foot wingspan and stand out athleticism allow him to play much bigger than his 6'6 height ... Michael rebounds very well utilizing his length and athleticism while never forgetting the fundamentals of boxing out ... Has a nack for being in the right position for rebounds ... Offensively does everything well whether it be set shooting or off the bounce ... Attacks the basket at will and also is an underrated playmaker ... Great motor, understands that hard work will lead to success

Weaknesses: His ability to play on the perimeter is a work in progress ... Still has more of a big forward's game, but at 6'6 it's obvious he's got to become a small forward ... Athletically the rest of the class has been gaining on him as his athleticism hasn;t progressed ... lacks range on his shot past 15-17 feet, needs to continue to work on this area ... Handles the ball well for a 4 but needs a lot of work for a 3 .... A jack of all trades type who shows the ability to do everything well, but a master of nothing ...

Overall: Michael is a great kid that is well worth the hype that he is receiving. He will make Kentucky a better team as soon as he steps foot on campus. Likely a one and done candidate and his work ethic will rub off on his teammates and that is why we believe Kentucky will contend for a national championship next year. Lexington fans should enjoy Michael's short stent on campus. Very bright future the only question is whether or not he will be a go to guy in the NBA but with his desire and love for the game I wouldn't be surprised if he does.

Stent?

He has a better offensive game and upside than Wallace. I think he would be a great acquisition in the #5 to #8 range if the Raptors have a pick in this area.

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 01-08-2012 10:41 PM

MKG would be the ideal player in the draft for the raptors. He is the perfect fit for this team. He's a nice overall player but is still very young with a lot of potential. Also, I'm new to raptorsforum but I am not new to raptorspace.

If you analyse the slow-mo, you see that he travelled 2 times. After the initial steal, he took a step without dribbling. Then, he clearly takes 3 steps for the dunk.

:p

it looks liked to me that he stole the ball and was already running at full speed as the ball began to dribble downwards, then took the legal 2 steps before planting himself and then dunking.

but who cares, it was a nasty dunk

:p

pay attention to the players in NBA, even PGs who bring the ball up the court takes steps before dribbling up the court. ;D

Not a strong shooting performance today but MKG still had a productive game with 17points 12rebounds 3steals 1block in Kentucky road rivalry win over Tennessee 65-60.

10pts 9reb in the first half vs #7 Florida

Jimmy Dykes gave him a lot of love on ESPN. Said he will be a all-star one day in the NBA. Said he is the best taking the ball to the hoop in a long time at the college level.

thats anti-raptor ball if you want to be a 2 or a 3 on this team :police:

He's a terrific prospect, and he's only going to get better. His handles and perimeter game have improved throughout the year. In a lot of ways, he reminds of T-Mac and Pippen when they were younger - long, lean slashers who great ability to finish near the hoop. However, T-Mac and Pippen were better facilitators and ballhandlers, but MKG is much better defensive player and rebounder at the same age. In time, I think MKG's ballhandling and playmaking will improve enough where his team's offence will run through him.

not sure if this was posted elsewhere:

It’s around this time every year when we start to see some of the top players in the country swear they’re returning to college next season. And then, come April, they go pro anyway.

As a result, most people took Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s comments after Kentucky’s win over Vanderbilt with a grain of salt.

“I’m graduating here. I’m not going nowhere. I’m staying at Kentucky,” Kidd-Gilchrist said, according to Brett Dawson of Rivals.com. “I’m dead serious. I don’t know why y’all laughing.”

Will Kidd-Gilchrist definitely return to school? I have no idea. I wouldn’t doubt that he’s thinking about it, though.

Kidd-Gilchrist is just wired differently than most of the star freshmen and college players these days. He’s always been that way. He has never truly carried himself like a superstar, and even his skillset doesn’t resemble that of a typical “future NBA All-Star.” Kidd-Gilchrist outworks players, he outhustles players and he’s a winner above everything else.

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 03-15-2012 11:08 PM

9pts 7reb in #1Kentucky win over Western Kentucky. As I said in the Davis thread, very easy win for Kentucky.

Kentucky/MKG/Davis play the winner of #8Iowa State/#9UCONN matchup.

RaptorsandBuckeye FaN 03-18-2012 07:19 PM

MKG not being a scorer in the tourney so far, and Kentucky has not really needed it I guess.

2pts(1-4) 7reb vs Iowa State.

2012 tourney:
5.5PPG(42%) 7RPG

As noted in the Davis thread, MKG/Kentucky will take on Indiana in the Sweet 16.
