Draft Profile: Kyrie Irving
Born: March 23, 1992
From: Melbourne, Australia. went to high school in West Orange, New Jersey
University: Duke

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 172 lbs
Position: Point Guard

Strengths: An excellent athlete in a solid 6'2 point guard body, Irving has complete command and control of the basketball in terms of handle and running a team ... He's super quick, and makes it almost impossible for his defender to stay in front of him on a one on one basis ... Will cause havoc with his ability to get into the lane and open things up ... He has a remarkable ability to change direction on the dime, making him virtually unguardable and deadly in the open court ... Has shown the ability to finish with both hands around the basket ... His outside game is above average for a guard entering his freshman year - since he has the ball in his hands most of the time, most of his shots are pull ups off the dribble, which he has shown to be an effective weapon for him, displaying sound fundamentals with his feet setup and a smooth release ... has 3 point range ...

Weaknesses: Irving tends to get too caught up with his ability to handle the ball, at times causing over dribbling and poor offensive team possessions ... Since he's so quick and elusive off the dribble, he finds himself getting an open look on almost every possession, not necessarily a good thing from your point guard ...

anuary, 2010: Irving will be the best point guard prospect heading to Duke since Jason Williams laced them up for the Blue Devils. He has great size for the 1 and all the intangibles you could ask for regarding that position. His handle is high-level and he had a number of dribbling exhibitions in the open court that were simply remarkable. His ball control, tight handle, and precision passing alone will make the Cameron Crazies lose their mind. He can explode to the rim with the best of them and he can knock down the 3-point jump shot with regularity. He manages the game very well and knows how to get his teammates involved. It will be shocking if he isn't an All-Conference performer and possible All-American his freshman season.

Duke Blue Devils
Kyrie Irving is special. He's the only college basketball player LeBron James follows on Twitter, and the only player Mike Krzyzewski has allowed to wear No. 1 at Duke. Coach K has been effusive in his praise for Irving, saying he'll "transform" the Blue Devils' offense. But what does Irving actually do that Jon Scheyer didn't last season?

I watched tape of the Blue Devils' final scrimmage, against Cal Poly Pomona, to find the answer: Irving acts as a "knife." The only other recent college point guard with defender-splitting skills like Irving's is John Wall. And while Wall displayed more raw speed in his year at Kentucky, Irving appears to be a better decision-maker on the fly. Watch this sequence against Pomona's 3-2 zone, in which Irving takes the ball on the left wing, waits for a Mason Plumlee screen, and comes off of it so sharply and without hesitation that he catches the other two top-line defenders moving in the wrong direction:

Once in the lane, Irving has no trouble drawing the left-block defender into the air, then dishing to Josh Hairston for an easy two.

The whole sequence isn't mind-blowing -- I imagine Irving will pull off crazier splits in pick-and-roll sets during the regular season -- but it certainly represents a departure from the staid point-guard play of Scheyer.

Kyrie is without a doubt an elite level guard. He is the New Jersey Player of the Year, and he has the skills to make an NBA team now.

Duke's backcourt is instantly one of the nation's best with the addition of Irving. The combination of Nolan Smith and Irving gives Duke a one-two punch not seen since the early 2000s dominated by Jay Williams and Chris Duhon .

Kyrie is not a perfect player. He does have flaws, but these weaknesses actually play into some of Duke's strengths. The largest complaint you hear about his game is his jumper.

Irving will not be close to the best shooter on this team. He won't be considered top three, but that is not a problem. Next year Duke will be more of a running team. They will allow Nolan and Kyrie to drive and dish allowing pure shooters such as Dawkins and Curry to have space to shoot.

His addition will also allow the big guys to bang down low. The Plumlees will be able to run wild on the boards and score plenty as the result of double teams.

17 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 TO in 25 minutes

wow he looks great

great court awareness, like the fact that he hits 3's, also his finish on the fast break is great, this guy is a legit top 5 draft pick, the hype for him is over, well the hype from high school to college,

Seth Curry looks great

Duke should be the early favorite to repeat, its going to be tough to beat Seth Curry, Irving, Singler, Nolan Smith, and the plumlee's,

I'm really surprised how easily Kyrie Irving has integrated himself into a lineup that was considered to be the favorite to win the National Championship

this bodes well for whoever drafts him

great, for college, he is a coachable player

one highlight pack I watched, a team came close to winning, coach K called time out, and start laying into the players, Kyrie Irving was listening and you could tell he was into the game, they won in a blowout after that

I never wanted a player more than this guy, he plays winning basketball, ala Chris Paul type

if we get him we will always be a playoff team

i truly believe if we get him we would instantly become a 4th seed, and jump Celtics on there way down of old age, def better than the Hawks

31points 6rebounds 4assist 2stls 2blks.

MrClutch 12-02-2010 05:44 AM

i want irving on this team bad now

Windex 12-02-2010 05:54 AM

he's going to be the #1 pick, doesnt look like we'll be in the top 5 picks since the East sucks at the bottom

rapsmannn 12-02-2010 05:16 PM

before the season start Kyrie was rated as the 3rd pick overall now he has to be the no 1 pick

damn where going to need a miracle to get him, there goes that dream

hopefully he gets into the westcoast I dont want to see this guy dominate us knowing if we just tanked properly he could have been a Raptor

we'll probably end up with the next Marvin Williams, Harison Barnes
