Default You're the GM, what do you do ...

What would you do if you were the GM of this team right now? What would your strategy be to get better? Or would you try to get worse?

It's an interesting time to be a Raptors fan right now because everything seems to be in play right now.

At this point there's not much you can do. Just go with it.

So basically this is just another question about whether or not we tank...

There is no reason for us to get worse at this point. We have a bunch of young players developing and at this point it doesn't make sense to trade most of them because they all have upsides that have yet to have been discovered due to the fact that they are still learning the NBA game. No we shouldn't trade Lowery because we can probably sign him in the off-season for a fair amount of money and if we lose him I'm sure MU has a backup plan.

So to answer your question no we should not tank

Nope, not at all actually. You misinterpreted the question entirely.

It's actually incredibly open-ended. You could say you could acquire x,y,z or look to strengthen here or there, or we should target this player or that player or say let's focus on development, or look to dangle a pick or look to make a seismic shift and move a key player for potentially another key player ...

Yep, that's what I'm kinda getting at.

And really, I'm trying to put this in a realistic format in the sense of, if you were in the GM seat how would you try to navigate the next few months that could potentially be critical in how we look in the next 2-3 years ... Yep.

Lol way to expand your mind.

I trade away the worst of the 2 picks in 2016 for the best big with the best contract I can find. I try to dump one of Hayes or Novac with GV for a more suitable backup PG. I sign Lowry in the summer anywhere under 12 mil. I try to draft Glenn Robinson III with the 20th pick or so.

And next year trade Fields as an expiring as quick as possible!!!

I think the decision on Lowry whether that comes now or in the offseason will dictate which way the team goes for the most part. I believe they have something good enough to build off,its just about stability and familiarity so I'd keep the core (KL,DD,JV&TR) together including re-signing Casey for 2 years with a team option for a 3rd.

I'd re-sign Lowry to 3 yrs/32M with a team option for a 4th worth 8M. I'd let GV and JS go but keep PP. The draft is key,if the pick is 18th and lower,I'd dangle it with Amir to see if I could upgrade at PF or get a nice young SF like Tobias Harris.

I would sign Lowry for anything around 10-12 over 4. I like the option idea for the 4th. As for Casey... on the fence. I think only MU and the players would be able to tell you if he should really be resigned. Depends how much they really want to follow him.

Yea I'm on the fence with Casey at times but I think he's improved since he first arrived. It seems like he's working with a better overall staff which is important too. I ask,who could they replace him with that's better and wouldn't cost too much? That's when I lean towards keeping him and value personnel consistency.

I'd front load Lowry's contract,something like year 1-14M,year 2- 10M,year 3-8M and an option for a 4th for another 8M. Total is 4 yrs/40M.

Also,I'd try to have JV work on his low post movements and footwork with Olajuwon in the summer.

I would:

- Sign Lowery for a max of 4 years, and no more then 10 million a year (I like the idea of 3 years guaranteed with the fourth a team option) 10,9,9,TO 12 million or 12,10,9 TO 9 = 40 million
- Resign Patterson for around 4-6 million (QO is about 3-4.5 mill i believe)
- Resign salmons on lower cost contract (MLE or less)
- Dump Hays, Fields, GV
- Try to keep as much of this team chemistry in play for as long as possible considering how hard it is to build an NBA team that is as TEAM oriented as everyone on this team...Because even our 2 All Stars in Lowery and Derozen are TEAM first, Individual play second. The last thing you want is a NYK or Nets...lots of talent that does not work well with each otherin terms of overall TEAM play.

- Re Evaluate everything and everyone after after our playoff series win/loss and go from there, we we win the playoff series, at the least Casey gets resigned to a 2-3 year deal (3 year deal comes with TO on third year)

Maximum raises (and this applies to frontloading and backloading) are 7.5% of the first year salary for a Bird Rights free agent. Best you could frontload a 4/40 deal is 11.3M, 10.4M, 9.6M, 8.7M.

Try to acquire some young pieces for the future. Cory Joseph, John Henson, Dennis Schroeder. I would offer our 2014 draft pick for a player like John Henson. Henson and Valuncianus would be a great front court for the future.

MIL isn't giving up Henson. No way. No how. Too much potential.

Try to find a deadline taker for pieces like Hayes, Novak and Hansbrough. Bring back expirings or late picks (contender 1sts, or fringe team 2nds).

Look for a taker for Salmons' (and Hansbrough if there's no deadline deal) contract, in exchange for a decent (late lotto to mid-first) pick and a bad contract, or maybe a late pick and a contract like Perkins (bad, but fills a role on the team).

Re-sign Lowry to whatever it takes (I expect 5/50 would do it). Seems like the only real competition for his services might come from LAL. If he wants to bolt, contact LAL about a Lowry S+T for Nash and whoever they draft (assuming they have a 10th ish pick). Lets them grab a top PG and still have loads of cap to play with to do a quick rebuild and compete in Kobe's last couple years (without waiting for their draft pick to develop).

Sign 2Pat to a 5 year deal at 6-7M per. Assuming Lowry re-signs, use the remaining cap space to sign an extension with Amir for 7-8M per (plus a little signing bonus this summer). Depending on who went out and came back in at deadline, and who you draft, fill in remaining roster spots with minimum level guys on one year deals, keeping cap space free in 2015. Extend the QO, but only re-sign Vasquez for a one-year deal unless he signs for real cheap long term, and only if he is still needed as backup PG.

Then next summer you could be looking at max cap space while having Lowry, DD, Ross, JV, Amir, 2Pat, draft pick all locked up.

If Lowry bolts, whether you manage to pull of the Nash swap or not, try to move all the vet pieces (including exploring the market for DD) for picks and prospects. DD would have to be a very good return though. I'd just be worried about his mental state if he had to go through more losing.
