Question Are you "souring" on Sonny Weems?

Are you souring on Sonny?

I had really high hopes for him after this summer and the start of training camp... But now i dont know... i just cringe when he has the ball these days...

I think he needs some time out of the starting lineup...

He's slumping and learning on the go. He and DeRozan are the same in that they try to do too much or do nothing. Give him 25 odd games to learn the in between game. If we were contending I'd say bench him, but were not, so just let him learn and if he becomes a good player...Hurray! If not then it's not like he's the cause of the underdevelopment of Kleiza or something.

He's not fit to carry Andrea's samurai sword, let alone play on the same court as him.

Gee - it wasn't predictable. He's filling a bigger role and having problems.

Question - who isn't in any particular game?

Why sour on this guy? Why so negative? Why? Why? Why?

This team has no half-court offense. None. Teams that defend us in transition are going to force a lot of bad plays. Simple as that. If Sonny still tries to do too much a month or two from now, then whatever. Unfortunately we can't let the whole team go up against the other team's second unit.

I'm not sour on him, I just think Jay should start Kleiza now instead of Weems, I think it's time...

Part of the whole thing about a rebuilding year is that you play the kids and you see what you have when all is said and done. This season should tell us about our young players and whether or not they're worth 'the investment.' Sonny is going through a rough patch for sure. I'll reserve judgement until the end of the season, but right now he isn't looking so good.

what if I already soured on him long ago?
I mean, what do expect from a scrub from the D League
if he becomes a good bench player then we got a good deal. but he's not going to be a consistent starter in the league ever

No.

Why? It's pretty simple actually, he's being a fed a bigger role than he can handle right now with very little guidance.

I'm all for young players and developing youth, but who exactly is teaching these guys the craft of playing the SG? SF? etc.

I know some were saying, Peja! but no, he's not that guy. What'd be great is maybe having a guy like Jerry Stackhouse sitting on the end of the bench and working with Weems in practice and helping him to teach the nuances of playing the position. What to look for, how to make him better etc.

Instead, we're relying on, well, they're playing so they'll be better. Instead, when I watched Weems yesterday I saw a guy forcing it to get out of his funk. Not good.

Also, please, no Kleiza. Someone needs to tell him when he gets the ball at the top of the key to swing it, instead of charging in like a bull and throwing up a ridiculous lay up. At least Weems offers something defensively as well.

What about Alex English couldn't he teach Sonny a thing or 2 about playing SG/SF?

I'm not soured on Weems, just realistic about his potential. He and DeRozan are redundant. If I'm keeping one, it's DeRozan. If I could upgrade SG/SF, send one out.

I think you need a guy who's played in this league recently to be able to teach about the way it goes (e.g. fouls).

Sonny needs a break out game to get his mojo back.

Agreed, he's in over his head. But too early to give up on him.

I agree... but his breakout game should be something like 12 points, 4 steals, 2 blocks, 0-0 from 3, 2 monster dunks, and like 7 assists.

I think the guy is going through a bit of difficulty on the offensive end. Defensively he is slowly pulling the trophy away from Bargs for worst pick and roll defender. Teams are pegging him as a guy who never goes over the screen.

Biggest reason Julian should start, especially when Calderon returns. Bayless/Barbosa/Weems/Kleiza/Davis running fast break against second units would be gold.

Wright would play D, and help on the glass. Coach could micro manage Weems' minutes and sit him when he forces boneheaded plays.

I really can't believe people are surprised that the Weems train has slowed to a crawl? That why NBA teams have scouts and scouting reports. Teams noticed he was starting to have a little success and now they know what to do to shut him down . It was no different than the gameplan the Bobcats implemented in the second half last night to force the Raptors to take long jumpers ,,,,,it didnt help that they couldn't hit the broad side of the bus or hang on to the ball.
