Default You have the pen......

...... and Bosh slides you the paper.

What number do you write down.

What do we know?

Top saLARY IS 24 MILLION, so thats max.
Realistic max is closer to 21 million however.

Without going into details, (as few of you care to acknowledge reality anyhow) the economic climate is horrid in the NBA and getting worse to the cap is falling significantly.

The Canadian Dollar has fallen 15 cents in 7 months.

You're the GM.
You have a decision to make.

You have a good player in Chris Bosh, with a good head, and a solid work ethic, but he isn't a team carrier.

Economically, you have to pay attention to the dollar, and the econemy, so you may gamble and low ball your offer thinking nobody will want to match.

You can guess as to whether your star wants to stay at all.

You also have to gamble on his replacement in Bargnani, who, has shown improvement, but you are honest internally, and know he's not very agresive, and is really just average right now.

What number do you write down.

I'm curious.

I write 17 million x 4 years

And people were bitching yesterday about too many Bosh threads?

Anyway, your number is about right.

(17Mil per) i'd give him 4yrs + team option for 5th.

I don't know how, but I'm imagining from what BC hinted at, that he is going to be creative with regards to the economic situation, and try to point out a scenario that brings a little more certainty to all parties involved.

I'd start with 18 mil for 4 years but I won't mind going upto 21 mil a year but that would be the max

u guys do realize if the cap falls, they will impliment a way so max contracts will only count against your cap for the new max, so say you gave Bosh 23ish and the new max was 20, they would only count 20 against it.... its simple logic, they arent going to screw over so many big market teams with max players, so lets live in reality

i give Chris the max, and i dont even blink an eye doing it. He already makes 14ish, bumping him up 3 mil is an insult for all he has done here imo

I do exactly what BC is doing. I offer him the 3 year max extension this summer. I don't touch the 6 year 100 mil+ deal next summer which it'd take us risking him losing him for nothing to give. If he says no I call up Pat Riley and get the cheaper younger version of him in Beasley

But hypothetically... I'd give him 5 years/80 mil. Working out to a big more than 15 a year.

I was under the impression that guaranteed money is guaranteed money. If the max now is 6 years 130 mil and that's what the team/Bosh agree to, that's what he gets. But maybe I'm wrong. Unless the way you explained it is for it counting against the cap... which makes sense... but nevertheless 20 is too much for Bosh anyways. And the cap will start going up again after next year I think

i say pay him max if........we can go over teh cap or this MLS shit. He can get max as long as we can afford getting a deacent rest of the team. At this stage in the game if we pay him 20+ million a year and not go over the cap we will not be making the playoffs for a while.

yes i mean it will only go against the cap for the new max after the CBA is renegioted. It would cripple alot of teams if they didnt do it like this, it will all be grandfathered in, so the arguement that when/if the cap goes down in the next CBA it will handcuff us even more is invalid, the cap has never gone down and if it does, believe me, they will make sure not to cripple half the league by not grandfathering it in.

give him 23 million and raise the cap by 3 million and he's still crippling the team.

So you seem to suggest that ultimately the financial viability of this franchise is questionable, unless it can go forward as a middling team that makes the playoffs now and then. Actually a crippled team sounds worse than that. But not being able to afford a guy that scores and rebounds in the top ten in the league without being crippled doesn't sound much better than being crippled.

What are we looking at then? Potential that gets cycled through here every few years like a farm system, with talent needing to be moved to ensure that the crippling effect does not take place, or talent simply wanting out because there's no certainty and no room for bringing in the guy or guys that can make other guys able to perform better? I mean you sound like you've got it all figured out. So I'll ask you - should I bother being a fan of this team, or am I just wasting my time?

looking for a bunch of guys that will play for 6-15mil ish, dont want superstar status, love the city and are willing to take a paycut to play together. That kinda stuff is easy to find dont cha know.

Oh and if one of them has a breakout year or 2, and gets too high in status, we ship him off for more young prospects (that will obviously all bloom into superstars/starters/role players) and a draft pick (which we will obv select the next Jordan, then we will finally offer that guy the max. Dont you see, it's such a simple plan, and BC is the guy to make it happen.

Yeah I know. We'll just become a place for europeans to play. Oh snap! Guys are leaving the NBA to play for more money overseas!

Look - if Jose Manuel Calderon plays a full season healthy and improved, then a whole lot of gloom and doom gets erased right there. Add the couple of players that they can add while offering Bosh the max, and things look quite bright, and they can start working on making the most for the future by making moves beyond that point. It's actually pretty hard to get in the sort of situation that NY got itself into. I'd much prefer to see actual gains, even if they don't look like automatic finalists, and build upon that, than just slough everything off right now and go with Triano and bunch of potential that offers nothing but the promise of more moves needing to be made to find more potential.

There are too many junkies hooked on potential around here. You get started with that shit and it never stops. Say no to potential!
