2. The Raptors finally seem ready to deal former No. 1 pick Andrea Bargnani, but what can they reasonably expect to get for him?

RM: At this point, trading Bargnani amounts to a salvage mission. His trade value is certainly low, but only because Toronto has passed up so many more opportune times to deal him. Bargnani upsets a lot of what the Raptors hope to be, and yet a four-year low in scoring (16 points per game), along with shooting marks (39.8 percent from the field and 31.9 percent from three-point range) that approach the worst of his career, make worthwhile deals hard to come by. (Heís also now out indefinitely with a torn right elbow ligament.)

Thatís why packaging Bargnani with pending free agent Jose Calderon does make some sense, even if doing so requires the Raptors to take back some heavy contracts. Calderon is a useful player for Toronto at this stage in its rebuild, but this could be GM Bryan Colangeloís last chance to get something for a player who will surely be gone after the season. Better to pull some value from Calderon and Bargnani both than none at all, particularly considering that the Raptors are unlikely to have much cap room until 2014 unless they make some fairly considerable cuts via trade. In that, I see no problem with Torontoís taking a chance on a potential Gasol deal, if such an offer comes to pass, or any well-compensated gamble provided that any contract it receives expires before 2014. What may end up happening is that the Raps foot the bill for another teamís mistake while also grabbing a prospect or pick for their trouble, though itís hard to pin down which players/teams might fill that hypothetical scenario.

BG: Iíve never been high on Bargnani, and his season has been a mess in every conceivable way. If the poor shooting, lackluster effort and more attempted three-pointers (4.5 per game) than rebounds (4.3) didnít dissuade potential suitors, Bargnani has been busy making the wrong kind of headlines off the court. He appeared indifferent at best to trade talk, reportedly got called out by teammates in a locker-room meeting and threatened legal action against an Italian journalist with whom he conducted an interview that he claims was reported improperly. Is anyone surprised that the Raptors have nearly as many wins (three) in the week theyíve played without Bargnani than they had in 21 games with him (four)? That was a rhetorical question. No one is surprised. The Raptors/Bargnani/Colangelo triumvirate has the feel of a situation thatís run its course.

The hang-up is that Bargnani might be the one big name who has submarined his trade value even more than Gasol this year. Unless he magically comes back from his injury a totally different player, trading him is addition by subtraction at worst for the Raptors given that heís owed $10.8 million in 2013-14 and $11.5 million in í14-15. Any assets they get in return (ideally picks and expiring contracts) would just be icing on the cake; the only requirement in moving him is taking back less guaranteed (or potentially guaranteed through a player option) money. Thereís probably a deal-seeker willing to buy low and hope that a change of scenery will produce better production and effort.

The point is: what is BC able to get for him?

Dario 12-20-2012 06:34 AM

italians wanting bargs out of TO :yeah:

SteveTT 12-20-2012 06:50 AM

You are right, but its for the best of everyone:
- Toronto doesn't have to deal with a player that costs a lot and lacks motivation and can develop Davis (perhaps if he is given the reign of a starter he would consider extending).
- Everyone seems to have given up on him, so i dont see him gaining back motivation and confidence
- A change will do wonders for him (i hope) and Toronto will get something back

I personally hope for the L.A. Lakers, since Gasol at this time seem the only player that could fetch (via 3rd team) a pick and/or prospect and a veteran that would help this team, even if means parting ways with Calderon (i personally dont think he will resign here anyways).

I don't mind the Gasol for Jose/Bargs trade. But do we really want a big man coming back? With Ed playing up to his potential, Amir providing solid minutes off the bench and JV being the clear starting center going into the future, Gasol may just stunt our guys' growth. On the flip side, I guess, he could also be a good mentor for JV before he enters his prime... and it doesn't seem like we have much of a choice given how poorly Bargs has played.

JDMtors 12-20-2012 12:12 PM

Not sure if Gasol is the type of bigman we need now currently, and I dont like the idea of Calderon + Bagnani for Gasol. Gasol hasnt been great this year either himself. I sometimes wonder what if we just do a Bargnani for Okafor straight trade.
JV/Okafor
Ed/Amir

no to Gasol...unless it's a threeway and we get an SF back

edit...and btw...Bargs and JC in separate deals...more bang for our buck that way

Nothing unless you package him with someone of decent value.

Just not true. You know it, but you love it.

Really? What does Bargnani alone get you?

Probably a horrid contract in return... like Okafor's.

I highly doubt anyone would be giving anything of value for him now though.... maybe a few years ago... but based on the season that he's had so far? And the fact that he's injured? Not much.

Raptors1995 12-20-2012 01:18 PM

Donnie Nelson probably wants Jose even more now. He was linked to him recently. With Collison losing the starting job to Fisher, I can see them trying to ship one of their guys and/orprospects in return for Calderon. Something like a Marion and prospect/pick for Calderon or they could get a third team involved. The trade will fill the PG void and add to that Nelson loves future cap room.

Raptors1995 12-20-2012 01:27 PM

Regarding Bargnani: He's a lot more attractive to teams in a larger package with Calderon. That's the Lakers, that is. We have to really see how things go there with Nash and Gasol. We could become the big beneficiaries in the sense that we get a good return of assets from a third team. I can see Minny's Williams, Ridnour, and Pekovic coming our way.

I wouldn't trade Bargnani alone if we're getting a bad player and contract in return. I think Bargnani's value is still at a point where we might be able to pull off a three team trade with LA/Minny down the road. We could get Stoudemire for him, not that I'm saying we should given his contract. But I would strongly consider it, if they add young assets in Copeland and Shumpert and take one of our more onerous contracts (Fields). Bargnani would be a great sixth man for the Knicks. There's still a lot of possibilities out there. We could then subsequently trade Calderon for another player. If Calderon continues to play like he is, his value is only going to get higher.

How about Perkins(OKC) and !st round pick(Via Toronto) for Bargnani?

Get back a 1st and a solid, veteran big who can help shoulder the centre position load for Valanciunas as the rookie develops

LX 12-20-2012 02:01 PM

Funny thing is he is scheduled to return right around the same time as the Walking Dead.

1 to 2 months they said. I would tend to think 2 would be more probable.

Bargnani does not fit with anything OKC needs. None of his strengths help them. They already have plenty of scoring punch and outside shooting. And they have a capable frontcourt scorer in Ibaka, to keep the opposing defence honest. All Bargnani brings is defensive liabilities.

Any deal involving Bargnani has to have the potential to make a team better or give them an added dimension they're lacking, or else the other team won't do it. Well, or they take him just to dump a shit contract on us.

yeah, i like that. Let's just get a pick for cald and a pick for bargs. Any decent player coming back is a bonus.

AA, LK and Pietrus are not the future but then this season isn't the playoff year now anyway, just ride whichever player is hot.

make 2 draft picks and a FA signing in the summer.

maybe we can get better, a starter/prospect (+ pick?) in exchange for bargs but if not, i'd take the above scenario.

edit: i agree with bill, that OKC might not be the place for bargs but i like the overall idea, a solid vet and a pick.
