Raptors Would you Trade Valanciunas for a Top Pick in Next Year's Draft?

Simple question, but no simple answer: if we could acquire a Top 5 pick (no further guarantees, just somewhere between 1-5) in next year's draft, right now, would you give up Jonas Valanciunas in some kind of trade package?

I was having this discussion today with a friend and we both said yes with some trepidation. There's certainly no sure thing when it comes to the draft, but if it was the only way to get into the top tier in that pool of talent we agreed we'd take the risk rather than continue to tread water.

What are your thoughts?

Would be tough to turn down. Nice to get a player who's younger and whose contract is controlled for 2 more years than JV. The question is though - would any team with a top 5 pick deal it for JV?

Also- as much as I like JV - what's the point of having him if he'll continue to be ignored on offense and won't get 30-36 mpg like others in his draft class? He's falling behind some of them.

I wouldn't be too against it either way. I like JV, but I also love the thought of having any of the top 5 this year. It'd be lateral more or less.

If that pick came with a second top five pick, then yes!

I'd like to see what JV's capable of when he's actually INVOLVED in the game rather than just being an afterthought.

If it were guaranteed to be Wiggins or Randall then that's an easy yes. However for top 5, I might have to pass. JV is a definite talent with all-star ability. No guessing.

I can't wait for Rudy to be traded, and JV to get the actual fucking ball.

Good question and something I thought about earlier. If it was part of a larger deal that added pieces as well then yes. Not sure just straight up.

Yes. If Colangelo was making that pick, I probably wouldn't, heh...

I think top 5 in this draft = a good chance to get a true franchise player, i.e. one of 15ish players in the league. It's a gamble, and there's always a chance that the team just "breaks even" or messes it up, but I think Ujiri makes me feel comfortable enough about it.

Top 5 is hard to say yes to. For the top pick I'd have to say yes, but the 5th is a clear no for me at this stage of the season (draft night is different, since you know who's on the board). For the range, I say no - hard to come by real two-way centers in this league. But it really is a but of a toss up - I certainly wouldn't be furious with the move.

I would - but they wouldn't. I doubt a top 5 next year would be traded foranything but a top 20 player.

it all depend of the package involve.
if it's just JV for a pick, hell no.
how do you garanted a first top 5 ? only after the lottery, and which team in his right mind would take a shoot at a franchise player in the draft for a Probable-All-star center.

if we were in the opposite situation : detroit offer Drummond in exchange for our 5th pick this draft, would you do the trade ?

For the record, I don't think a team with a Top 5 pick in the draft WOULD even trade it straight up for Jonas.

That said, I would probably do some kind of Jonas & DeMar deal for a Top 5 pick and another small asset. I would also probably swap Jonas for any one of Wiggins, Randle, Parker or Smart.

And no, Drummond isn't a game-changer so I certainly wouldn't trade it for #5.

Yes. He is not being used in Raptors, so would rather watch him play where coach appreciates him. Meanwhile Casey's smallball squad would profit of another addition.
