Default Worst Head Coach

We've had our share of bad head coaches in our 15 years. some have been downright horrible.

Let's look at the list - and the numbers aren't pretty.

Brendan Malone (21-61)
Darrell Walker (41-90)
Butch Carter (73-92)
Lenny Wilkens (113-133)
Kevin Oneill (33-49)
Sam Mitchell (156-189)
Jay Triano (46-60)

Some of them went on to other NBA coaching jobs after their time in Toronto, but most are no longer coaching in the league.

So this begs the question. Who was the worst of the lot? Let's remeniss about some bad times shall we.

Walker. By far. He was horrible. At least with KO's system, they played decent D.

i voted for Walker as well. And if i remember correctly he upped and quit as head coach too. Yeah - that guy was a piece of work.
How the hell did he get that Washington gig after?

Wilkens was pretty horrible too during that last season of his. He was prototypical of a bad coach given a good team.

I loved Kevin O'Neill.... Nothing to do with his coaching, he just seemed like he was about a split second away from cardiac arrest all the time

Brendan Malone - Good coach that went against his GMs wishes by trying to win. Coaching suicide.

Darrell Walker - Knee jerk replacement put there by people that didnt know any better.

Butch Carter - Best motivator. Overvalued his worth to the planet. More suicide.

Lenny Wilkens - Got it from good sources that the NBA told Toronto to hire him to save the franchise. Was a corpse that didnt understand the new game. Wore out VC and set the franchise back years.

Kevin Oneill - More kneejerk. Headcase and a drunk. Worse season I ever sat through.

Sam Mitchell - Thought he was the star of the team and never actually coached. You can only scream for so long.

Jay Triano - Has the knock of being a hometown boy. Doesnt get the credit he deserves. That will change with a long playoff run. First coach to use a system that fits our players rather then make the players fit the system

interesting points Raptorman. I find the Wilkens one a little hard to believe, i mean why would the league 'force' a team to hire one guy? Like what photos does Wilkens have of Stern?

I was pretty shocked when New York hired him after us though.

you think KO was really that bad? His brand of ball was boring but at least some structure was present. He has been always thought well of in college ranks (kinda and now coaching a plumeting USC program). I'm not sayin ghe was awesome but he seemed to have some control over the team and not Walker horrible

Walker let Zeke dictate his career. Dam fool

i'd go with walker as well. i'm not with raptorman on lenny, though. he didn't know how to properly utilize carter, but he developed the players that surrounded him into more distinguished role players. lenny was predictable, but he got more from less than what butch Carter had.

I think that a big reason for Oneill's failure was that he never really had the players' support. His (erratic) way of coaching may work better on more impressionable youngsters, not so much on grown men. I got the sense that he lost the team pretty quickly.

And while defensively they were OK, they were unnacceptably horrific when it came to scoring.

You also can't argue with success. Although its not much he is the only coach to get the Raps in the 2nd round.

Darrell Walker = Dressing Room Cancer

The darkest days of the franchise were during DW's second year. I was sure that we were about to lose the franchise and I would have to cheer for Vancouver which at least seemed to be stable...

Thankfully it didn't turn out that way.

Haha I remember that Kevin Oneill interview like it was yesterday. "Ya I smashed a lamp. I smashed a 250 dollar lamp when I found out Jalen Rose broke his wrist. I'm sure you would do the same."

That teams talent wasnt very good but O'Neill was the worst. Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt our team have Loren Woods as our starting center. Lol what a joke. But no matter the talent the dude had a flat out boring style of play and he looked like a rapist. Very hard to like the guy.
