Default Worst Case Scenario capwise

A bit inspired by quotes like these:

So what if...

No money & no bench.

No S&T, no MLE.

Then Raptors are going to have to find bargains.
Who are the players out there willing to sign for the veteran minimum salary that still can produce something? Name potential players here & discuss the ones mentioned.

TS begins:

point guard:

Jason Williams

will turn 34 in november. Has been out of the league for a year.
Wants to return in the NBA. The question is if the year out hasn't hurt his skillset and if his body is still up for it.

+ excellent ballhandling and passing, championship experience, maybe recharged his battery in his sabbatical - wanting to return at least shows appetite for the game, probably won't get (m)any offers so I'm sure he'd sign for the vet min.

- bad defender, bad knees, rusty?, maybe Ukic will do just fine.

Kevin Ollie, turns 37 in december. Salary 2009: $797,581.
Had injuries but still started 20 games last season. Not too impressive stats though. Unlikely to be resigned by Minnesota or so I've read.

shooting guard:

Fred Jones

I was surprised to see he only made $459,782 last year at 30 years old.
Then I found he had a part time contract so he might be looking for a bit more this summer. I mention him anyway.

Lindsey Hunter

I don't know him that well as a player and don't know if the Bulls look to keep him either, but my impression is that he is a solid veteran and was great on the Bulls bench last season. You probaly all know much better because he's been a Raptor already. I saw he didn't play too much.

I put him up here because of his age I think he might be available.
Salary 2009: $722,515. He'll be 40 in december.

small forward:

Didn't find any realistic targets.

power forward:

Leon Powe

Salary 2009: $797,581

Celtics are not offering him a contract and others might be hesitant to do so as well because of his injury past and surgery. Could be worth the gamble for a team in desperate need of depth.

+ would be a steal if he returns to his old level

- unsure future, might not want to sign for a minimum wage.

Lorenzen Wright

33 years old and there's speculation that he will retire. Maybe because he doesn't expect any offers? Maybe he should, or maybe the Raptors should consider a guy like him as the 5th option big man.

Mikki Moore

Not really a catch as Doc Rivers benched him in the playoffs because he sucked, but hey, beggars can't be choosers right?

center:

Brian Skinner

Salary 2009: $1,262,275/33 y. o.

My only worry is that the Clippers would like to keep him.
He's originally drafted by them as well. Not sure though, so he's legit.

Rasho Nesterovic

Does he want to come back, and for that money? I read his name all the time on this board, so I guess (at least the former). He earned $ 8 M last year.

Maybe I overlooked a couple of guys, please add. And discuss these options.
I just wanna say that I don't think highly of all these players or something, like that Toronto has to get them all and they'll be fine, but I'm just going through the FA's for possibilities.

beggars cant be choosers...
we could use J-Will, he can pass a bit.

We just need one or two backup SF's and we'll be good...cuz we are getting antoine wright to backup DeMar

You guys wouldn't take a chance on Powe? I would definitely give him a call at least.

okay...Powe is great but I think the Raps have more things to worry about than acquiring a 4. They need a freakkin 2 and 3....they already have Hump, Jawai, O'Bryant, and Evans for bigs...but no backup wings!!!

Here's the list of all the FA's this summer (and the next) that I used btw:
2009-2010 NBA free agency - ESPN

Maybe some good wing players are on it, I bet you know many players much better than I do.

Don't forget BC has the BAE to offer which isn't great but it's higher then the minimum.

BC may be able to make more space under the cap by trading away a big to sign a free agent. It'll be tough the since it dropped.

For 2009-10
Min Team Salary: $43,275,000
Cap level: $57,700,000
Luxury Tax level: $69,920,000
Current Salary (8 players): $46,872,844
Calderon, Bosh, Bargs, Humphries, Evans, Ukic, Banks, DeRozan*.

*Unsigned (cap hold).

Add $10,000,000 (Turkoglu) and we're at $57ish million, meaning that we will have $12 million to spend still, right?

I just read a blog that suggests Milwaukee might waive Bruce Bowen.

Bucks are over cap but under tax level - JSOnline via HOOPSWORLD

He's 38 but he was still elected in the NBA All-Defensive team in 2008 (8th time!).
I'm not sure if the Raptors would be favorite to land him but who knows?
I think he belongs on the list.

Nope...my understanding is that at 57 mil we've got 700k to spend. You can't go over the cap unless you're using exemptions, MLE, Bird or otherwise.

oh. i always assumed that a team could go over the cap, but just not over the Luxuray tax level. I guess i shouldn't assume it could be so simple.

damn. This team looks really screwed, barring some blockbuster trade.

Actually since O'Bryant wasn't waived by July 1 he's on the books too for 1.6 - 855,000 if he's waived now. I'm pretty sure Douby and Jawai have guaranteed contracts for this year too.

Can't we sign some minimum wage players to push us over the cap so we can start using our exceptions?

Ya kinda. Depends how the Hedu deal goes down but if we end up just signing Hedu (the worst case) then they would have $12 Mil to spend but would be limited to a max offer of 1.8Mil for the BAE and 1Mil minimum.

It's not like they can go offer someone 5mil... they can't.
