Raptors Wojnarowski takes a shot at Hollinger

Quote:
Levien is making these deals based largely on the recommendations of John Hollinger, a statistician who worked for a cable sports company. The San Antonio Spurs once used him as a consultant and regretfully took his advice to sign a free agent named Jackie Butler. It was such a disaster, the Spurs had to attach Luis Scola to a trade to get Butler out of town.

his wasn't the '86 Celtics broken up in Memphis today, but, still, a contender became something far less over the past week. All of this didn't need to happen so fast. Between an owner guaranteed to make a profit and a front office guaranteed to believe it's smarter than everyone else, the Western Conference has one less contender to come chasing the defending champion Heat in the NBA Finals.

The Super Friends NBA is going, going and will soon be gone, and James will be left to choose one partner in 2014. Three's a crowd in the new NBA, and that'll be an immense part of James' decision about returning home and making everything right again.

Pera bought into a great time in the NBA, where the genius talents of the sport's biggest stars can fund his revenue-sharing checks in Memphis. Why did they have a lockout? Well, LeBron, this is why: Two stars per team and guaranteed profits for the owners. Make no mistake, James has everything to do with those transformations of the modern NBA.

I knew Hollinger stats is a gimmick. And with the two trades Memphis is much weaker now, speaking of future flexibility and young players when they were one step (one SG) from contending

How were they going to get that one peice? A late 20's draft pick? They were right up against the tax so they couldn't sign anyone of value. Which SG was going to push them past OKC? The Heat?

They already ranked 21st in points per possesion I believe, so they moved an overpaid player for a cheaper (though worse) player in Prince. So they got a cheaper player that fit their needs while opening up the options to add to a still solid core without paying the tax, which I assume ownership won't allow them.

Do you think they were going to win it before this trade? I don't, though it certainly wasn't impossible. I assume they came to the same conclusion.

No I don't. A good SG would get them deep tho. But it pisses me off that they get good grades and praise for the trades that made them worse.

Bosh left Toronto because we were not willing to go into luxury. BC was good maneuvering resources but you can only do so much

Chad Ford ✔ @chadfordinsider

Interestingly, @johnhollinger's Draft Rater HATED Ed Davis in 2010. Had him ranked as 54th best prospect. 2010 NBA Draft: Which prospects have the most pro potential? - ESPN …

I rip on Hollinger all the time. Then I take heat from Blazer alumni for telling people like it is. You got to watch basketball to find out who's good. Just because your calculator says this guy is better then that guy, doesn't mean that's the case. I totally understand that Hollinger's system works great for fantasy leagues. But in real life, the ball does the talking.

Woj is a really good basketball writer who knows his shit. This screams vendetta to me. I'm not necessarily against it

Woj is the best NBA writer out there (except when he gets overly dramatic) after Bill Simmons.

well both admit this was a good move for toronto.

for obvious reasons.

Reading one big fish go after another in the media is fun though, for sure.
