How much of a departure Ujiri’s hiring will be from the Raptors current direction remains to be seen. According to NBA sources one of the most determined backers of the Ujiri’s move was Colangelo. The two are friends and it was Colangelo who was endorsed Ujiri for the Nuggets job.

The two men are different. Colangelo prided himself on having his fingers on every aspect of the franchise, from basketball decisions to marketing and corporate relations.

Ujiri, 43, is described by those close to him as someone whose preference is to keep his focus narrowly on building a team.

“For (Ujiri), his work is basketball. He doesn’t worry about all the other parts. He’s not a politician,” an NBA source close to Ujiri said. “He’s not into all that. His work is basketball and the grind of it and making the basketball team the best it can be.”

Yet while the salary and Leiweke's convincing recruiting efforts were too much for Ujiri to pass up, Ujiri's is relationship with Nuggets team president and son of owner Stan Kroenke, Josh Kroenke, made his decision tough. The Nuggets gave him his first legitimate NBA opportunity after he came over from his native Nigeria, when he began his scouting days in Denver after working as an unpaid intern in Orlando previously.

Ironically, Ujiri will be replacing his old boss, as former general manager Bryan Colangelo was placed on the team's business side earlier this month. The Raptors also added a personal component to their pitch, offering to support Ujiri's foundations in Africa that he has made a priority for so long.

Ujiri worked wonders with the Nuggets roster during his short time there. Only Ty Lawson remains from the team that he had at the start. His tenure began with a bang, as he rebuffed lesser offers for Carmelo Anthony in his first summer on the job before trading him to the New York Knicks in a deal that helped establish the Nuggets' new core.

Now we just need George Karl to follow him here and work under Casey as the lead assistant coach. Turn everything on it's head.
