Raptors Win more this season or Tank??

Still early, but i heard Doug Smith talking on the radio tonight and he was talking to McCowan about the benifits to winning more games than expected this season and at least challenging for a playoff spot. He was saying that with capspace you want to show that you're a team going in the right direction and that the draft is a crap shoot (which i don't agree with when it comes to this upcoming draft). But it makes you wonder, with Valaciunas coming next season, we could always trade up in the draft or try and get a good piece 10-15 in the draft. Where do you stand, do you want to tank and try and get a top 3-5 pick or win some games, try and compete for the playoffs and try and sell this team to free agents?

just play like you can.

I'll be happy with whatever the result is so long as we don't expect rental guys like Butler or Barbosa to get us there.

I have voted for tanking because of the result I wish for, not because I believe for a second they'd actually do it on purpose. Not with this coach, not with these players.

On the other hand, we are always one hamstring pull away from 10-games losing streak.

Of course players are going to try and win, as they should. But we've said a million times that ending up 9th or 10th in the conference in the pursuit sux....more so in this draft.

The team should just continue to play hard, and Casey should continue to give minutes to the youngsters. This year is about development. Competing for a playoff spot would also be quite invaluable for Bargnani, Derozan, etc., helping them to become better players in the future.

The team, however, should explore dealing any players they don't consider to be part of their long-term future, such as Barbosa, Butler, etc. Accumulate draft picks as much as possible, as this year's draft should be extremely deep.

Well, it could be taken either way. Wouldn't it better in a deep draft then a shitty one? At least if we pick 10th in a deep draft we likely get a nice player and we still have a chance to move up.

Yep. And judging by what we've seen so far, such could be the curse of the Raptors.

If we do well, a team that has a great player like valenciunas already comming and cap space needs to develop a winning mentality.

Win as much as you can. Worse case scenario we get a 15-18 pick. Best case scenario we get a 1-5 pick.

Not really because the draft could be one of the deepest in several years. Players like Kidd-Gilchrist, Lamb, Rivers, T. Jones, plus others would be sure-fire top-5 picks. But thanks to the lockout and several prospects staying in school, this year's draft could be very special and the Raptors could still get a great core piece late in the lottery.

I'm down for sneaking into the play-offs. Toronto is a whole new city come play-off time, the energy inside the ACC is so electric. It'd be good to get the young guys some playoff experience as well.

If all else fails, we can always trade Baby Ed and Bayless for a lottery pick.

Yeah, yeah. I want a franchise guy out of this draft. I want Durant or Rose or Howard, even if I can't get LeBron.

do we really decide whether this team "tanks" or makes the playoffs?

I understand, but there are only so many franchise guys available in the whole league. Half the teams don't have even one. Can you really pass up the chance to get one for the sake of 3 or 4 months of puffing up your chest? Because those players obviously think they are "too good" to sign here once they blow up. A different story when you have been drafting well like OKC.

I hate to reach into hockey, but how would Patrick Kane or Jonhnathan Toews look on the Leafs right now?

Win.

I never like the idea of tanking on purpose. Takes away from the point of the game. If you're not gonna try, don't bother playing.

This is really tough. The more I watch the Raps play the more I think we're head and shoulders above the Nets, Cavs, 'Cats, Pistons and the Wiz. If this is the case then you could say why not shoot for the playoffs, although since we'd be 7-8 at best we'd get crushed by MIA/CHI. Or you could just play DeMar, Jose, Andrea, Ed, Amir, Jerryd, Leandro and James in an extremely tight eight-man rotation so that they get exhausted/injured after a certain amount of time and start losing games.

But really I think if we hit too many wins before a certain point in the year then perhaps the best idea is to trade our pick completely or perhaps 'move down' (this would be educated guessing though) in the draft and trying to net a piece. I'm thinking like a 1st Rounder + Jerryd for Houston 1st Rounder + Lowry. If we trade it completely we might even be able to get someone of Igoudala's quality.

With a new coach, especially one striving to change the culture, I feel differently than I did at the beginning of last season. It's tough. Plus, we know the roster is getting an infusion of talent from JV anyway. We might have already caught a break in last year's draft.

If the Raps make the playoffs or come real close, then that means they've really improved through internal progression. Derozan's 3 point shooting alone makes me optimistic that he works hard in the offseason and further improvement will continue. The Raps having a good season would probably also mean that Bargnani's recent play was sustained for a year. That makes the team less desperate for an infusion of talent from a top 5 pick, since it would mean Bargs and DD are already making the team somewhat competitive, with further improvement to come.

If DD and Bargs can get the team close to the playoffs, there would be a lot of reason for optimisim, since JV is not even here yet. You're already adding a lottery type prospect next year. And since the 2012 draft is solid, you can probably get a decent prospect with a later pick.

This year I'm content to just see them play hard and let the chips fall wherever they fall. I'm just watching. No hidden agenda.

Well, I doubt we could steal Lowry away, but some variation of this strategy might be a good idea, in my opinion.
