For what it's worth, Draft Express has Austin Rivers going 18th overall in this years draft at the moment. So win now it is.

After this season....yeah, probably. Better to have two good young + cheap SG's then re-signing Barbosa or a backup who'll cost more. And if he works out and Derozan walks in a couple years he's there and ready to go by then.

we honestly should tank. if we don't tank, we will be in the middle of the conference for years to come. too good for a lottery pick and not too good to contend and hang with the big teams like philli. our roster will basically be like derozan, bargnani, jonas, which isn;t likely to contend unless we add one more piece to put us over the top. but if we do tank we could get another allstar and then have a roster of 4 all stars or near all stars with derozan, bargnani, jonas, barnes/gilchrist/whoever then we could trade someone for an up and coming pg although that is easier said than done

i think rivers can switch over to the pg spot easily enough.

especially considering who is dad is, and, if hypothetically, he was drafted here and spent a season working with Jose day in day out as well

If we want to win, I suggest we ship Butler off to Antarctica ASAP.

Fuck, if Pietrus's knee didn't fail that physical we would have him instead of Butler and Forbes.

See this thread misses the point altogether, neither of those choices is the best for the organization.

You decide what system you will be (continuing?) to run and focus on the players who will be around next year that can fit that system.

You play those players in those roles as much as you can to have them get much better where they need to.

If they win a lot of games, that's fantastic, you might actually be a contender when you trade your other assets, get a half decent pick, sign a new FA.

If you lose a lot of games, you get a great (hopefully?) draft pick to fill one of the holes that was preventing your system from breaking through (take BPA if not and make a trade to get what you need)

The decision to tank is bad because the players (DD, Bargs, Bayless, Amir) aren't being pushed and are being trained that losing is ok within the organization. It makes us less attractive to other cities for the FA market.

The decision to "go for the win" is bad because, let's be real, you can't win. So don't waste time winning meaningless games and giving players significant minutes or playing your team around what you have if they won't be there next year or beyond*!

*exception being players for pumping value for trade purposes

The answer is put your future out there and run them like sled dogs.

if you want to win, tanking is the only option
smart organization tank in such a way that the players don't get affected too much. We took a great step towards that this summer when we basically sign the worse players we could possibly get for one year contracts. If this is not enough, we have to trade Calderon for some young talent if possible.

we need a superstar, otherwise we'll just end up like the rockets, denver, atlanta or indiana, good teams who may win a playoff round, maybe even two if they get lucky. But they'll never win a title or even close close to.

this team has no superstars, and I doubt JV is that good too.

People say tanking is against the spirit of the game. I disagree, when the management tanks with the purpose of making the team better in the long run, that's smart leadership. The players should always play to win and losing only makes a competitive player hungrier to win later. The GMs play a different game, with different rules.

it takes discipline to tank because nobody likes to lose, but the payout is great for those who are willing to stick with the program.

as far as the team becoming less attractive for free agents, that's great. We don't need any free agents (yet). Let's get a high pick (for simplicity sake, let's assume we get lucky, get the #1 pick and draft a lebron type of player). With that player, JV, Bargnani and derozan, let's win a shitload of games in 2012 (42+). When you have a very strong young core and 20M+ in cap space in 2013, you think free agents will refuse to come here because we sucked in 2012?

I'm really afraid BC won't have the guts to sacrifice the summer of 2012 and he'll spend his cap-space too soon. I bet most fans would be willing to give another tryout season to our young guys, especially when we could have TWO high-quality draft picks to groom.

We have no choice but to try to win games once your on the court .. You continue to change the culture of effort and defense.
At the sametime, it BC 's job to get a top tier talent / potential superstar thru the draft. I want a top draft pick ... Then with cap space we could become a contender.

So play hard ... Change the culture ... Assess the keepers vs fakers on our roster ... Lose games ... Get a top player thru the draft .. Then get another key piece thru cap space .. This last piece doesn't need to happen next year. It's critical not to kill the culture with the wrong free agent.
