True, and i still say injuries will play a significant role.

I'd argue that if the worst case happpens and we end up 9th or 10th in the conference, it will do nothing for our profile around the league anyway and we still lose out. Not to mention that given that players who visit Toronto regularly are still ignorant of it, do you really think they have any concept of who JV is?
It's not an arguement for losing deliberatley. It's just that the high pick is what we've suffered for.

If this gets messed up, we could be back on the 6th to 10th place treadmill again.....and being shunned by franchise players.

If I know I'm declaring bancruptcy, I'm spending every last cent on stuff I want and need before I do it. A $300 winter coat, not a Walmart special.
If I'm tanking, I hope the tank is hard....and it doesn't hurt when the end of the tunnel is so close.

If I were a prospective FA I think that I'd be more inclined to look TOR's way if I saw a scrappy team make the playoffs when no one ever thought they would. Add in JV coming next season and the situation's even better.

This team needs to learn how to win and play hard consistently. That, in my mind is more important than a top 5 pick. Besides, you can still get a good player in the teens as long as you do your homework.

.
But if we narrowly miss the playoffs, the substantial improvement (jumping to 9th) could be the result of Derozan and Bargnani becoming a more consistent duo. If that is the case, we're not as desperate for talent, because Derozan will likely not peak this season. It depens on the circumstances that allow the Raps to get to 9th. If we got 9th simply because 4 other teams suffered freak injuries, instead of because the Raps are actually more talented, that would be shitty because it's not real improvement.

We desperately needed a top 5 pick last year because there was no signs that this team had significant talent. I'm not saying things have definitely changed in 6 games, but there are certainly some encouraging signs, especially when you take into account that the Raps have that top 5 pick from last year in reserve.
.
Consider it from another angle, if this team stays healthy, and then finishes in the bottom 3 of the East, that will mean that Bargs and DD will have probably regressed as the season goes on. We don't want that. I mean, NJ, Washington, Cleveland look pretty weak. To finish worse than them, with a healthy roster playing, would be a terrible sign for the franchise. Given the current situation in the East, the only way I would not feel like total crap watching the Raps finish bottom 3 is if it happens due to something out of their control, like injuries. But I'm not going to sit around hoping Jose's hammys blowout.

Edit - Demar will "likely" not peak this year. Although I suppose it's possible.

We need more talent, plain and simple. It's beautiful to see that hard work, good coaching, and defence is finally being implimented and winning us games, but if we want to become a contender we need to get another high pick and add in some vets after.

We dont have to tank, just lose.

A DD/ED/JV+ top 3 pick core is probably one of the top 3 cores in the NBA if the pick this year pans out. We already have some good role players, so when the young team gels together, we'd have something special. We do need a top flight talent though to take that next step to become a consistant playoff team then contending team.

Yup I don't care if we loose more than we win I just want the team to compete every night at all times under Casey!

I honestly think we just might be a consistent playoff team once we get JV. The East is pretty weak when it comes to those last 3 seeds.

I agree though... if we're talking about working towards a title we need more talent. I suppose it's possible that we might address that through FA though. Crazier things have happened.

I just can't see this team going 15-51 under Casey. And that's probably the record that you'll need for a top 3 pick.

If we are out of the top 8-10, draft Kobongo & throw some money at Batum in free agency.

Depends what the goal is.... to be a playoff team, win a round or two every season.... or to win a championship. If you want to win a championship, you need a mega-star.... and the only way we get one is to have a very high pick in the draft.

I had to laugh listening to Jonesy on the Fan tonight, comparing the current raps team to the bulls from a couple years back.... saying how by winning they attracted FA talent the next year. Yeah.... that's great.... except they already had Derrick F-in Rose. LOL.... we're missing that small detail.

just lose, baby.

100% confident we end up with a top 10 pick once injuries kick in. 2nd unit can't score.

but if we make the playoffs then it means the players improved and one of DeRozan or Bargs (or both) are finally the franchise player(s) we are looking for.
