why so with the backloading? That's quite a lot of money to throw at him. I hope it doesn't take that much to grab him.

Wouldn't front-loaded be better for this team?

The problem is he has to offer him what he thinks will force the Nuggets to decline to match. And i'm sure he's had his ear to the ground and knows what other teams with capspace might offer. Besides we'll always have to overpay a little for quality players.

Good luck trying to trade that.

Not if you want to add more talent in the next couple years.

If we DO end up with WC as our starting SF I'd also look into the possibility of a trade with either BOS or GS for Rondo or Curry (if his ankle's not fooked) respectively.

Jose + our 1st rounder for either of those guys.

With Bargs coming back (presumably) after the break and Wilson on the team, I don't think we'll end up with a top 5 pick... so I'd rather turn it into another solid, young player at a position of need while w have the chance.

PG - Rondo/Curry
SG - DD
SF - Chandler
PF - Bargs
C - JV

Not a bad starting 5 right there. Maybe you play Chandler @ the 2, JJ @ the 3 and bring DD off the bench if you like.

True... which is why I'm thinking the $40M over 4 years will be likely.

Yeah a player that plays D, can score is tough to move in the NBA. If we could trade an equally paid Turkoglu who's older, worse and win the deal.....anyone can be traded.

you don't overpay for role players. Biggest mistake you can make as a GM.

Hence the trip to Toronto. The Raptors (and Colangelo’s historic tendency to overpay) have been used for leverage in negotiations on more than one occasion. Just this last December the Raptors were used by Shane Battier and his agent to extract a more lucrative offer from Miami. While the Raptors have less than $5-million to offer under the cap right now, the belief is that they could engineer a trade if need be to free up more cap space, possibly by offering Leandro Barbosa or some other player to a team for next to nothing if they have the cap space or trade exception big enough to absorb the contract. The game that’s being played here is that the Raptors know that any reasonable offer for Chandler is going to get matched by Denver, so they’d have to juice the numbers enough to make the Nuggets balk after going on a spending spree post-lockout.

NOT LIKING OUR CHANCES

Quote:
Spent more than a few minutes trying to figure out the cap machinations that would make it possible for Wilson Chandler to sign here this season – if, in fact, he’s not simply using the Raptors for leverage – and I’m glad they invented Tylenol.

All the Raps can do this year, most likely, is get to about $4.3 million in cap space, get Chandler to sign an offer sheet at that number and then grumble when Denver matches so you can probably discount that.

Let’s put it this way: There are three best-case scenarios that have to happen for a signing for this year to occur:

If – BIG IF – they can find someone in the next couple of days to take Leandro Barbosa off their hands for nothing in return they can likely shed the $7 million or so to make an offer that at least makes Masai out in Denver go “um, er, ah” and gives Toronto a chance. But – BIG BUT – finding that team is virtually impossible because none of the teams with cap space right now to do it probably have the desire to make the deal.

That leaves …

Hoping Chandler and the Nuggets can’t figure out a long-term deal and he signs for just the rest of this season and becomes an unrestricted free agent in July, when Toronto will have oodles of money to spend on him, or someone else.

Of course, the other hope is that Chandler could decide to sign here for the rest of this season using some of Toronto’s approximate $2.5 million left on the mid-level exception and use the final 33 games or so as a mutual get-to-know-you period.

What happens?

I wish I knew.

I do know Toronto put on the full court press with Chandler yesterday, squiring him around the city and the arena, letting him meet with poobahs, Henchmen and players and making him feel at home.

Whatever happens, I’m hearing, is going to happen quickly, this should all be resolved by the middle of next week at the latest.

We know Chandler’s a good basketball fit, a long wing shooter who would instantly become one of Toronto’s key pieces.

The Raptors have liked him since the summer, they may know by Sunday whether that feeling is mutual.

Chandler's qualifying offer expired, and Denver won't sign him for rest of season because he'd then be unrestricted July 1.

Welcome to Toronto, Mr. Chandler.

This better turn out or it will be the second time we've missed out on a Chandler.

To get anything done we'd need to move someone. Barbosa, Calderon or Amir would do. If we see a move done in the next week we'll know something is getting done.

I can't see how this works unless Barbosa gets traded for a TPE.

There's no point in signing Chandler unless there's minutes for him.

I have to assume that it's Barbosa that gets traded, since Chandler could then back up DD at the 2, as well as start at the 3, leaving some minutes at 3 for LK/JJ.

Backup DD at the 2?

If he's signed no way is he a back up to Demar. But yeah, one of Barbosa or Calderon could be traded but we'd have to take on less salary. If we trade Barbosa for a young player making 1-2Mil + TPE it would give us about 8.5Mil under the cap to sign him, adding to our current 4Mil in capspace. I think??

One thing is for sure, it's pretty obvious that Colangelo has been planning on going after Wilson for a while now. I would think he's got ideas on how to get it done if at all possible.
