Why is rasual butler allowed to shoot 3's?

This guy has been horrendous shooting 3's. :sigh:

Bargn88 01-09-2012 11:29 PM

He was brought in as a 3 point specialist lol

0nekhmer 01-10-2012 12:24 AM

Only reason wby i dont entirely hate him is because he plays team ball, has good shot selection, and of course because of that one game he had like six 3s and went clutch in 4th..

Shifty.py 01-10-2012 01:45 AM

these are nice wide open shots
and he used to hit them at high clip throughout his career
and people claim he hits all threes in shootarounds
and he does his job on D

but I can't wait until he is replaced by Kleiza

Beesh 01-10-2012 02:55 AM

haha my thoughts exactly. Isn't he a former 3pt champ? the guy is horrible. i can see him in late game situations for a quick shot, or a guy used mainly to maintain momentum of a game from his 3's.

Dario 01-10-2012 03:14 AM

I can see him getting his groove back, hes getting good looks.

Carlito 01-10-2012 07:09 AM

Bet you he starts shooting the lights out of the gym ... He will get in a groove ..
I'm not saying I love the guy, but career stats do mean something ...

moujik 01-10-2012 07:49 AM

Well, I'd rather give those 6-7 shots from 3 to AB. They're so proud that AB doesn't take as many 3s now, but it's his most lethal weapon! Or else give these shots to JJ, I know he's bad, but he's a better defender than Butler, who's ok, and would gain some confidence in his shot (even if it's hard to believe) until Butler can work his problems out off the court.

GOOD QUESTION.

Argh. Quiz question: what current Raptor is leading the team in three point attempts and has the worst 3P% of any Raptors player with a made three pointer? Hint - his three point % is .229 and he is my least favourite Raptor!

jeffb 01-10-2012 08:49 AM

Barbosa is shooting 25% from 3 also. Garbage!

i understand and respect the need for "spacing" on the floor which i think is why butler is out there in the first place...but james johnson has been playing like an absolute animal. if you're coach C and you're looking to really hammer home this new defensive culture, you have to think about rewarding JJ's defensive tenacity with a start. With butler shooting the way he is now there wouldn't even be much of an offensive drop off.

Northern Neighbour 01-10-2012 10:00 AM

Johnson is playing more minutes than Butler, so it's not a big deal on who starts and who doesn't. Johnson's energy also an important reason why he's coming off the bench. He provides a spark and intensity that is needed on the 2nd unit.

I understand your point, but I also ask, why rush to reward players with starting jobs? Let JJ prove he can minimize his propensity to take dumb fouls, continue to improve his range and offensive arsenal, and maintain his energy as a solid bench guy. What's the rush to always change starters?

JJ has no better than RB except for 3pts...JJ does bring some energy off the bench but he is forcing too much in his offensive game.

Klenzia is not a saver either at SF position and that's why BC is aiming for Devin Ebanks

IMO, we should release RB and sign Michel Pietrus and our SF rotation should be MP/Klenzia/2012 draft

i think in a year when the roster is set and you're in win now mode, there wouldn't/shouldn't be a rush to rotate starters as they get hot and cold. this is a transition year, a "building" year. i don't think rasual butler is in this team's long-term plans. i do think JJ with his energy, athleticism, effort is a guy you want going forward...so just thinking big picture i don't see why you wouldn't want to start him and give dude as many minutes as possible, if only to see if he can show you anything that would warrant him being a long-term asset.

JJ's lack of an offensive game is irrelevant as long as RB keeps throwing up bricks. Even if RB hits a couple threes a game, what JJ gives you everywhere else I think outweighs RB's one dimensionality.

and i guess the "starter" title itself isn't a huge deal but usually you associate an increase minutes with a starter's role whether he's already playing more minutes or not.

Johnson needs to cut down the fouling if he wants to even play..

Has he fouled out in any game? Casey should look to come up with something better for JJ than the ball on a wing vs set D, no movement from our other players and 5 sec on the shot clock. When there is movement he's shown that he can find team mates.
Butler are allowed to chuck, so why isn't JJ allowed to run the fast break, be it through occasional TOs?

halphbreedballer 01-10-2012 03:31 PM

If he doesn't turn it around over this 4 game stretch I would bench him in favour of big D James!
